Job Description

The Surgical Technologist provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon. The Surgical Technologist functions primarily in the scrub role and is responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. The Surgical Technologist possesses knowledge in the application of sterile and aseptic technique and is able to adapt to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting. The Surgical Technologist utilizes knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation and technology as member of the surgical team. Candidates may be considered for placement into either the Surgical Technologist or Advanced Surgical Technologist role based on years of experience, specialty training, and meeting the qualifications of the higher-level position. The Advanced Surgical Technologist expands on this foundation by supporting complex procedures, such as cardiothoracic, transplant, neurosurgery, and vascular and by contributing to protocol development, specialty instrumentation management, and workflow optimization for advanced surgical service lines. •Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited or military surgical technology program. Experience in retina, sports medicine, ENT and urology is preferred.
Licensure/Certification Required:
Current BLS certification required upon hire. Certification through NBSTSA required within one year of hire date. Surgical Technologists hired at the following locations prior to the identified dates, are not required to have a Surgical Technology certification through
NBSTSA:
• Mayo Clinic Arizona hires prior to 11/20/2024 Qualifications and Additional Responsibilities for Advanced Surgical Technologist Minimum 2+ years of independent scrubbing experience. Independently supports advanced procedures in one of the following specialties: cardiac, transplant, neurosurgery, or vascular, or has cross-trained to work independently in three or more specialties outside of these advanced areas. Manage and maintain advanced specialty instrumentation and equipment. Contribute to protocol and workflow development for new procedures and technologies. Demonstrates the ability to be prepared to handle emergencies that may include quick thinking, adaptability, and solid skills to implement emergency protocols. Works flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call expectations.
