Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
The Surgical Technician is a member of the nursing staff and performs the instrument technician role during surgical procedures. Assists in providing care to surgical patients according to Marshall Medical Center's (MMC's) standards of practice. Creates and maintains a sterile field, passing surgical instruments to the surgeon, disassembling the sterile field upon completion of the surgical procedure, returning the instrumentation to the decontamination room in the appropriate manner, and assisting with turning over the operating room and setting up for the next patient. Assists with maintaining the par levels of stock items throughout the department and maintains good public relations by interacting with patients, visitors, physicians and other staff members in a friendly and professional manner. The Surgical Technician assists in attaining department goals by functioning in other areas within the department, as requested. Ensures the safe handling of infectious material to protect all patients and employees.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Licensure/Certification:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an approved Operating Room Technician (ORT) course required. Certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Knowledge:
Computer familiarity required.
Skills:
Has the physical and mental health sufficient to accomplish the duties of an ORT. When on call, incumbent must be able to arrive to hospital and report to duty within 30 minutes of request.
