POSITION PURPOSE

The OR Surgical Technologist plans for proposed surgical intervention by selecting necessary equipment and supplies. Performs item counts to include but not limited to: sponges, sharps, vessel loops/umbilical tapes, bovie cleaner, and instruments pre-, intra-, and post operatively. Perform routine scrub as well as specifically delegated duties to promote patient safety and positive patient outcomes. Keep current with operating room techniques, procedures, instruments, supplies and equipment. Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

"Turning over" the Operating and Procedure Rooms between cases as quickly as possible to assure optimum medical staff utilization. Responsible for assisting in cleaning room before and after surgical procedures. Set-up equipment for surgical procedures. Knowledge and availability to assist with sterilization of certain surgical instruments and materials via gravity (flash)/immediate use, and pre-vacuum configurations. Knowledge and availability to follow sterilization processes to maintain best practices. Supports the facility nursing staff in all aspects of patient care treatment. Assists with Materials Management, as needed. Collects and disposes of trash and biomedical waste as per policy and procedures and delivers it to proper area. Picks up and deliver soiled linen to proper area. Discard sharps according to policy and procedure in the appropriate containers. Anticipates the surgeon's needs, selects proper instrument, and assists surgeon as requested. Assist Surgeon in gowning and gloving. Pass instruments quickly to surgeon when needed. Keep instruments free of blood and tissue. Wipe instruments with wet sponge. Aid the circulating nurse in opening the case using the basic principles of sterile technique and standard Operating Room procedures. Receive all solution and checks medications for type, strength, and expiration date with circulating nurse. Checks and labels any solutions or medications that are placed on the back table with circulating nurse. Able to work beyond scheduled hours if circumstances require it as determined by Nurse Manager. Performs special assignments as outlined and defined by Nurse Manager. Responsible and actively involved in the Quality Assessment / Performance Improvement activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduated AMA-approved Surgical Technician school. Current Surgical Technician certification. Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.
