Job Description

The Surgical Technician is a trained technician who assists the Physician in rendering professional care to patients undergoing procedures. Works under the direct supervision of the Physician. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff.
SKILLS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS
One to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in preparing patient for designated procedures Cleans equipment used per policy Initiates emergency measures as indicated Communicates pertinent information to physicians and co-workers Provides supplies and equipment according to surgeon's procedure card Stays alert for any break in sterile technique and initiates appropriate corrective action as needed/indicated Observes universal precautions Refers situations beyond ability or function to proper person Identifies patient, procedure, and site according to policy Keeps all working areas clean, neat and stocked Cleans room after each patient and leaves ready for next patient If assigned to scrub, prepares for procedure, sets up back table and mayo according to type of procedures Counts needles with circulator as needed Anticipates physician needs Prepares instrument sets for sterilization and takes to the proper area Assures patient privacy Positions patient safely for scheduled procedure as needed Moves necessary equipment to appropriate positions Participates in Performance Improvement/Safety Program Assists with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies Organizes room and keeps items off floor while keeping staff safety in mind Assists with housekeeping responsibilities as directed Participates with in-service opportunities and staff meetings Assists with cleaning of Operating Room Knowledgeable of potential exposure to hazardous materials Isolates contaminated instruments and supplies
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Visual Acuity:
Must be able to use visually oriented medical equipment. Must be able to read.
Auditory Acuity:
Must be able to use auditory oriented medical equipment. Must be able to communicate person to person and via telephone.
Hand/Eye Coordination:
Must be able to and have knowledge to adequately use all equipment and supplies needed in the operating room.
Hand Dexterity:
Must be able to adequately perform hand movements in the categories as follows: fine manipulation, gross manipulation, simple grasping, firm grasping and hand twisting.
Body Mobility:
Must be able to lift 1 to 15 pounds on a regular basis from floor to waist, waist to shoulder and overhead. Must be able to push, pull, bend, twist and reach up while performing duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment. Work may be stressful at times. May be exposed to the following hazards: Blood Borne Pathogens Communicable Diseases Chemicals Steam Sharp Objects Moving Parts of Equipment Radiation Full-Time; Monday to Friday; Day Shifts; No Holidays; On-call Requirements/Weekends
