Eye Surgeons of Indiana
SURGICAL TECHNICIAN ROLE SUMMARY ROLE OVERVIEW
This position is responsible for assisting the surgical team in rendering quality care to patients undergoing surgical procedures within the center, in accordance with established center policies and procedures. This role is based in Lafayette, Indiana, and is a part-time position scheduled for three 10-hour shifts (30 hours per week), Monday through Thursday.
PREREQUISITE EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent. Board certified CST or COA/COT certified with OSA sub-specialty certification. Minimum of 1 year operating room experience. Must have a high degree of technical skill and capable of working in a fast paced environment which requires flexibility and adaptability to changing patient care needs.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
Ability to interact effectively with physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, and patients. Skill in safety and infection control procedures by appropriately setting up sterile area and monitoring instrument use Proper method of handling instruments and supplies before, during and after use Knowledge of safe and correct positioning of patients for various procedures Knowledge of various steps of different operative procedures to be able to anticipate the needs of the surgeon Knowledge of various instruments used for each type of operation and the proper setting up of an operating room Demonstrated oral communication to provide pertinent information and suggestions to Director. Written communication skills necessary for charting and documentation Ability to anticipate the needs of the operating team before such needs arise Demonstrated ability in handling patient confidentiality Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following list describes the essential duties of this role. Individuals in this role may not perform all of these duties, or may perform additional, related duties not listed here. Prepares set-ups, materials and equipment for cases as needed and assists surgeons in all types of procedures as required Assists in transportation and preparation of patients including verifying of patient identification Helps surgical team to maintain patient safety through monitoring sterile technique during draping and surgical procedures. Provides a safe environment to prevent potential injury Maintains accountability for needles, sponges and instruments Maintains clean, safe and functional operating room environment and equipment Assists professional personnel in the control of supplies and medications Assists with patient care activities in the pre-op and post-op area as needed Accepts direction from manager or physicians and adheres to established procedures Maintains patient's right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors/family or client Helps with medical record filing, ordering and checking supplies. Participates in cleaning surgical rooms. Communicate supply and equipment repairs to appropriate personnel Assists with daily sterilization of equipment and supplies Maintains flexibility and performs other duties a required Observes universal precautions Performs all duties respectful of confidentiality and safety of all patients, employees and physicians Follow all Customer Service Standards and to create an environment where patients want to be treated, where referring doctors choose to send their patients, where doctors choose to practice and where employees want to work.
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment Must be able to stand 6-8 hours/day
Visual Acuity:
Average Visual acuity is acceptable. Must be able to use visually orientated medical equipment (ex. B/P monitor). Must be able to read and administer medication and perform physical assessments.
Auditory Acuity:
Average acuity acceptable. Must be able to use auditory orientated medical equipment (ex. Stethoscope). Must be able to communicate person-to-person and via telephone.
Hand/Eye Coordination:
Must be able to adequately perform the use of scissors, syringes, tape and gauze and other simple medical supplies.
Hand Dexterity:
Average acceptable. Must be able to adequately perform hand movements in the categories as follows: fine manipulation, gross manipulation, simple grasping, firm grasping and hand twisting.
Partial Body Mobility:
Must be able to maneuver upper body adequately, lift 1 to 15 pounds on a regular basis from floor to waist, 1-5 pounds from waist to shoulder and 1-5 pounds from shoulder to overhead. Must be able to stand, push, pull, bend, twist and reach up to 66% of the time.
