Four 10-hour days (Monday-Thursday) with one late day call About the Wing Operating Room The Operating Room at Baystate Wing Hospital is a close-knit, patient-focused surgical team providing high-quality perioperative care in a community hospital setting. The OR supports a range of surgical specialties and emphasizes safety, collaboration, efficiency, and exceptional patient outcomes. Team members work in a supportive environment where flexibility, accountability, and strong communication are essential to delivering outstanding surgical care. Position Summary Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and/or RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist works directly under surgeon/physician guidance to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist must possess expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique and demonstrate the ability to combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical processes, instrumentation, and advancing technologies. This role requires anticipation of surgeon and/or physician needs through constant attention to and assessment of the surgical process and patient condition to promote safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical outcomes. The Surgical Technologist supports minimally invasive, invasive surgical procedures, and therapeutic and diagnostic interventions across a variety of surgical specialty services. Patient care is delivered primarily through service to the physician/surgeon, with accountability for maintaining sterile technique, anticipating procedural needs, and ensuring quality patient care during operative procedures. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for maintaining the skills and knowledge necessary to function in alignment with assigned responsibilities and within departmental policies and procedures. Key Responsibilities Maintains safety in the operation, management, and inspection of designated equipment and instruments according to manufacturer guidelines and established policies and procedures. Participates as an integral member of the operating team, demonstrating knowledge of patient history, allergies, and intra-operative care plans. Demonstrates knowledge in the use of pharmacological agents dispensed to the sterile field, recognizing mixtures, dosages, and labels in accordance with policy. Maintains an environment conducive to patient safety and strict adherence to aseptic technique. Accurately completes required documentation within the Surgical Technologist scope of practice. Meets requirements of the designated clinical recognition ladder for Surgical Technologist Level I. Demonstrates skills and knowledge related to sharps safety initiatives. Demonstrates competency in intra-operative temperature regulation measures. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in specimen handling and labeling. Utilizes and communicates medical terminology effectively. Required Work Experience Graduate of a program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) or completion of a structured surgical technologist training program with professional equivalent credentials. Certification required for new hires without prior experience in a surgical facility before July 1, 2013. Preferred Work Experience One (1) year of experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist. Skills & Competencies Expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques. Strong knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and operative instrumentation. Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and respond effectively in dynamic surgical environments. Knowledge of surgical tools, equipment, and advancing technologies. Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and teamwork within the perioperative setting.
