Job Description

UPMC Somerset is excited to offer a rewarding opportunity for Surgical Technologists at all levels—Tech, Intermediate, and Senior. Whether you're just beginning your surgical services career or bringing years of specialized experience, this role places you at the center of life‑changing patient care! As a Surgical Technologist, you will support the operating room team by preparing sterile fields, passing instruments, ensuring equipment readiness, handling specimens, and contributing to the safety and flow of each surgical case. You'll be a critical part of procedures that change and save lives every day. This is a casual opportunity that will work on an as-needed basis. Responsibilities Prepare the operating room before each procedure, including setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble and verify both sterile and non‑sterile equipment; adjust and inspect equipment for proper operation. Ensure all medications are appropriately labeled and passed to the surgeon per policy. During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and sterile supplies to the surgical team; hold retractors or instruments, suction the operative site, cut sutures, and support sponge/needle/instrument counts as required. Assist with specimen collection, care, and preparation for laboratory analysis; help apply dressings as directed. Support the surgical team during gowning and gloving to maintain complete sterility. Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites; transport and help position patients on the operating table. Assist in patient transfer to recovery following procedures. Clean, restock, and maintain the operating room after each case, ensuring readiness for the next procedure. Maintain a clean, safe surgical environment by practicing strict aseptic technique and staying alert to safety and explosive hazards. Monitor, manage, and restock the OR environment, including special trays, graft materials, and equipment needs. May be responsible for documenting patient data relevant to surgical procedures.
