Job Description

Autonomously performs high quality, advanced diagnostic ultrasound imaging required for tertiary care in outpatient and inpatient settings, including abdominal, vascular, abdominal vasculature, small parts, and obgyn exams. Assists in complex invasive procedures and intraoperative cases with a team approach. Requires high level analytical ability to obtain appropriate images and required measurements, exercising independent judgment in the interpretation of the sonogram to synthesize and communicate a preliminary clinical diagnosis to the physician. Identifies imaging orders for accuracy and integrates medical history, clinical data, previous studies, and patient symptoms in determining the appropriate diagnostic protocol and tailoring the exam to the needs of the patient. Requires knowledge and adherence to isolation precautions and safe practices. Requires knowledge of sterile technique, procedural set up, specimen collection and handling, patient monitoring, and procedural documentation. Participates in research and innovation studies and incorporates new technology and techniques when acquiring images. Responsible for workflow efficiency, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, quality assessment (QA), and participates in maintenance of department accreditation. Fosters a culture of teamwork, professionalism, and mutual respect. Uses medical and ethical judgement, critical thinking and acts as a patient advocate. Is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Requires mentoring and teaching students and new staff, and is a resource for residents, fellows, physicians, and other health care personnel. Participates in teams, projects, education, process improvements, and or research efforts. Requires flexibility to staff various locations, shift times, and lengths including on-call and holiday coverages. Graduate of an Accredited Sonography Program and /or ARDMS registered or registry eligible. One year of experience as a Sonographer preferred. Associate degree or above preferred ARDMS registered or registry eligible in the areas of abdomen, obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN) and vascular technology (RVT). ARDMS registered in Abdomen, Obgyn, and RVT within 18 months of Mayo employment. Each certification should be achieved every 6 months. Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of start date.
