Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the application of non-ionizing high frequency ultrasonic waves to humans for a diagnosis of disease. Also performs clerical duties that may be related to the procedure.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High School graduate or equivalent. Graduate of an approved school of Diagnostic Medical Sonography or equivalent experience accepted by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography or American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Demonstrates the ability to work with patients and their families who are often under physical and/or emotional stress. Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with coworkers, supervisors, other departments, and providers.
License/Certification/Registration:
Registered in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification in Sonography (S) required. Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT, RVS, RT (VS)) required. Meets the American Heart Association's standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives direct supervision from the Imaging Supervisor and the Section Head of Diagnostic Sonography.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs daily operational and technical activities: Greets each patient in a pleasant manner. Obtains patient history appropriate for the examination. Confirms orders and patient's identification Prepares patient for examination. Explains procedure to the patient. Performs ultrasound examination as required. Differentiates artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognizes electronic equipment limitations. Consults a radiologist as necessary to ensure accuracy of ultrasound examinations. Makes permanent records of images produced. Transfers images and documents to PACS for dictation by Radiologist. Obtains stat readings as necessary. Calls reports as necessary. Takes call as needed. Schedules patients as needed. Makes frequent calibration checks. Maintains an adequate inventory for work area. Maintains a clean and neat work area. Escorts patients throughout department/hospital. Assists with the clinical instruction of sonography students, including explaining policies, procedures, and clerical functions. Performs clerical duties as needed. Complies with and performs Quality Assurance duties as assigned.
