Job Description:
The Vascular Lab Sonographer reports to the Vascular Lab Manager and performs all required vascular ultrasound and Doppler examinations at a high technical level under limited supervision. At all times, the Vascular Lab Sonographer maintains a high level of medical ethics, is self-motivated, strives to increase their knowledge and understanding of the field of vascular diagnosis and treatment, while constantly maintaining patient privacy and respecting patient confidential information. Key Responsibilities Obtains pertinent patient medical history and performs the required vascular lab examination(s). Identifies and records appropriate anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic images. Correlates the diagnostic images to the exam protocol and presents the examination to the physician for interpretation. Coordinates the vascular lab schedule and clinic schedules with office staff and supervisors to assure adequate workload coverage. Maintains a daily log of patients and completes vascular lab billing forms. Maintains ultrasound equipment, work areas, and adequate inventory of supplies. Assists with vascular laboratory accreditation through IAC (Intersocietal Accreditation Commission). Establishes good communication and rapport with office staff and physicians. Performs other work-related duties as assigned. Maintains patient privacy at all times with respect to OSHA and HIPAA standards. Uses initiative and independent judgment when necessary. Ensures patient comfort by explaining the examination to be performed and how it relates to their presenting condition. Uses the patient's electronic chart and consults with the referring physician to obtain an adequate clinical history. Uses optimal equipment settings to produce high quality images and examination data. Recognizes all structures visualized on the ultrasound image and is able to differentiate normal and abnormal findings and can recognize image artifacts. Is not afraid to seek advice. Adheres to examination protocols and, if clinically necessary, deviates from normal techniques. Enters all necessary examination data on a worksheet and prepares a summary of technical findings to provide to the interpreting physician. Assures examination completeness and accuracy prior to delivering exam to the physician. Provides appropriate patient care with respect to age-specific needs. Monitors exam report turnaround time and assures that all examinations are interpreted in a timely manner. Correlates vascular lab examination findings to surgical and other imaging techniques for quality assurance and to monitor patient progress. Participates in vascular lab QI meetings. Stays up to date in the field of vascular ultrasound by reading journals, obtaining CMEs, and/or attending conferences. Assists in the evaluation of new equipment and assists in the orientation of new staff. Stays up to date with basic CPR certification. Requirements and Qualifications High school graduate/diploma. Satisfactory completion of a formal vascular technology training program (2-4 years) must be registry eligible for the current year. Graduate from a diagnostic ultrasound training program (2-4 years) with one full year of full time clinical experience in a dedicated vascular lab and be registry eligible for the current year. At least two years of college with emphasis on the biological sciences with two years experience in a dedicated vascular lab and be registry eligible for the current year. Must be responsible, self-motivated, and capable of working with limited supervision under guidelines set by the supervisor. License/ Certifications Must have appropriate credential in vascular testing with active status. If not credentialed, must become credentialed within first year of employment.
