Job Description
Experienced Veterinarian / Senior Associate Veterinarian — Private Practice in Cullman, Alabama Lee's Veterinary Hospital is looking to add an experienced veterinarian to our team in Cullman, Alabama. We are open to conversations with veterinarians at different stages of their career, but this post is especially written for a doctor who already has real-world veterinary experience and is ready to step into a meaningful role in a busy, established private practice. We are not simply trying to fill a schedule. We are looking for a veterinarian who can bring clinical confidence, strong client communication, good judgment, and professional maturity to the hospital. For the right person, this role could grow into more than a standard associate position, with opportunities to help shape clinical workflow, team standards, mentorship, hospital systems, and the long-term direction of the practice. Job Overview Lee's Veterinary Hospital was opened in the fall of 1987 by Dr. Bruce D. Lee, DVM, a 1986 graduate of Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Nearly four decades later, the hospital remains privately owned and operated by Dr. Lee and continues to serve the Cullman community with the same practical, relationship-driven approach that it was built on. From the beginning, Lee's Veterinary Hospital has been more than a small animal clinic. Our practice has served a wide range of patients, including dogs, cats, companion animals, exotics, horses, cattle, and even larger exotic animals. That variety has shaped the culture of the hospital. We are a practical, hardworking, community-centered clinic that values good medicine, common sense, client relationships, and the ability to adapt to the needs of the animals and people we serve. This is an important time in the history of the hospital. After decades of steady service to the Cullman area, Dr. Lee has made the commitment to significantly expand and modernize the clinic into a nearly 8,000-square-foot veterinary facility. This expansion is about more than adding space. It is about building a better hospital for doctors, staff, clients, and patients. The expanded facility is being planned to improve exam room flow, treatment and procedure space, surgery and medical areas, client waiting and reception space, team work areas, and the overall daily efficiency of the hospital. For an experienced veterinarian, this creates a unique opportunity to join a practice that has deep roots in the community while also helping shape its next chapter. We want a veterinarian who can practice strong medicine, build trust with clients, work well with the team, and bring ideas to the table. The right doctor may have the opportunity to influence how the hospital grows, how workflows are improved, how support staff are developed, and how the practice continues to serve the community for years to come. About the Role This is a general practice veterinary position in a busy, privately owned hospital. Depending on the doctor's experience and interests, the role may include appointments, diagnostics, treatment plans, outpatient care, surgery, client communication, medical records, urgent cases, and collaboration with our existing doctors and support staff. For an experienced veterinarian, this could be more than a standard associate role. We are looking for someone who can step in with confidence, manage appointments and cases independently, communicate clearly with pet owners, and help raise the overall strength of the hospital. There may also be opportunities for the right doctor to take on a larger role over time, such as: Helping improve clinical workflow and doctor efficiency Mentoring newer doctors or support staff Helping strengthen medical standards and case consistency Providing input on equipment, facility layout, and hospital systems during the expansion Assisting with team training and communication Helping build better processes around estimates, client education, records, and follow-up care Potentially developing into a senior associate, lead doctor, or medical leadership role depending on fit This is not a corporate medical director posting with layers of bureaucracy. It is a private practice opportunity for an experienced veterinarian who wants their opinion to matter and who wants to help build something stronger. After-Hours and Emergency Care Lee's Veterinary Hospital has a long history of supporting clients and patients beyond routine appointment hours when needed. After-hours and emergency care can be an important part of serving a community, especially in a privately owned practice with long-standing client relationships. That said, we understand that work-life balance matters. After-hours expectations, emergency responsibilities, weekend coverage, and compensation would be discussed clearly before any agreement is made. Our goal is to be fair, realistic, and transparent. Depending on the role, after-hours or emergency responsibilities may include: Shared after-hours coverage with other doctors Limited emergency availability for established clients Weekend treatment checks when hospitalized patients require care Compensation for after-hours cases or emergency responsibilities A schedule structure that balances hospital needs with the doctor's personal life We are open to discussing what structure makes sense for the right candidate. We do not want vague expectations or hidden obligations. If after-hours work is part of the role, it should be clearly defined and compensated appropriately. Flexible Schedule and Role Structure We know that experienced veterinarians are often looking for more than just a paycheck. Schedule, autonomy, support staff, case load, family life, and long-term fit all matter. For the right veterinarian, we are open to discussing flexible options, including: Full-time associate role Part-time role Flexible weekday schedule Four-day workweek options depending on hospital needs Relief-to-permanent arrangement Production-based or hybrid compensation structure Leadership or senior associate structure Customized role based on experience, interests, and practice fit Our goal is to find the right long-term fit, not force every doctor into the same schedule or compensation model. What We're Looking For A strong candidate should have: DVM or equivalent degree Active or eligible Alabama veterinary license Prior clinical experience in veterinary practice Strong client communication skills Good clinical judgment Professionalism and dependability Ability to work well with technicians, assistants, receptionists, and other doctors Confidence managing appointments and medical cases Interest in practicing high-quality, practical veterinary medicine Desire to be part of a privately owned practice with long-term growth potential Experienced candidates are especially encouraged to apply if they have: General practice experience Strong client education and estimate communication skills Routine surgery experience Interest in mixed animal medicine, urgent care, or broader case variety Leadership, mentorship, or team development interest A desire to help improve practice systems and medical workflow Interest in a long-term role rather than just another job Responsibilities Responsibilities may include: Examining and treating patients Managing appointments and medical cases Creating treatment plans and communicating recommendations to clients Interpreting diagnostics and lab work Performing routine surgeries, depending on experience and comfort level Maintaining complete and accurate medical records Working collaboratively with doctors and support staff Helping maintain a professional, organized, client-focused hospital environment Contributing ideas that help the practice continue to improve Participating in after-hours, emergency, or weekend responsibilities if included in the agreed role structure Compensation Compensation will depend on experience, schedule, production ability, after-hours responsibilities, leadership responsibilities, and overall role fit. We are open to discussing salary, production-based compensation, or a hybrid structure depending on the candidate. For an experienced veterinarian who can step into a productive role, communicate well with clients, and help strengthen the practice, we are prepared to have a serious compensation conversation.
Potential compensation structure may include:
Competitive base salary Production or bonus opportunity Hybrid base-plus-production structure Additional compensation for after-hours or emergency responsibilities, if applicable Additional compensation for weekend treatment duties, if applicable Leadership or senior associate compensation structure for the right fit Benefits package depending on employment structure Optional compensation wording if you want to list a range: Expected compensation range: $130,000-$250,000+ depending on experience, schedule, production, emergency responsibilities, and role structure. Compensation may exceed this range for the right experienced, productive veterinarian. Benefits May Include Competitive compensation Paid time off Continuing education support Veterinary license and professional dues support Liability coverage support Employee pet care benefits Flexible or negotiable schedule depending on role Private practice environment Long-term growth or leadership opportunity for the right doctor Opportunity to influence systems, workflow, and facility planning during a major expansion Schedule Schedule will be discussed based on experience, availability, hospital needs, and the structure of the role. We are open to full-time, part-time, flexible, or customized arrangements for the right experienced veterinarian.
