The purpose of the Veterinary ICU Technician is to provide high quality medical support and nursing care to critical care patients. The Veterinary ICU Technicians assist our board certified critical care doctors in our state of the art ICU to provide constant care to critical care patients. All teams are under the direction of the doctor on staff. The doctor is the lead, and will be prioritizing patients, directing the team and is the ultimate decision maker for all medical treatments, while Shift Leads are the leads for managing the floor and its flow.Duties & Responsibilities :
Technical Duties- Identify sudden or minor changes in a patient's medical condition
- Performs and documents ongoing assessments including observation, physical examination, laboratory/test results, and patient response to procedural intervention
- Participates in the identification and clarification of patient needs, as evidenced by participation in multidisciplinary care planning, to achieve optimal patient outcomes
- Demonstration of sound decision-making in emergency scenarios based on patient conditions such as vital signs, patient presentation, and assessments.
- Ability to think critically in order to learn and maintain a high level of patient care
- Proficient IV catheter placement; Use and maintain IV pumps
- Understands and carries out written and oral directions
- Proficient and accurate drug calculations and administration
- Quality nursing and husbandry care of patients
- Strong working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacology
- Perform in‐hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs, as needed when lab tech is not available. Report diagnostic testing results to veterinarians
- Perform and/or participate in all other diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, ECG, BP, and glucose monitoring
- Provide nursing care for in‐hospital patients including all DVM requested treatments, diagnostics, and medications o Accurately and completely record all treatments
- Perform client callbacks as necessary
- Maintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians
- Actively engages in Rounds o Rounds delivered/received at shift changes, anytime a staff member comes on shift or leaves a shift o Rounds will be complete, detailed, and relative to patient & client care
- Ability to monitor anesthesia utilizing equipment such as pulse oximeter and electrocardiogram o Keep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical records
- Maintain cleanliness of ICU, working an patient areas. Ability to delegate cleaning tasks to Technician Assistants and Kennel Assistants as necessary Administrative Duties
- Log controlled drugs
- Know how to use the inventory module in our veterinary practice‐management software
- Restock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area
- Follow OSHA requirements
- Follow practice's health and safety protocols
- Be proficient in using our veterinary practice‐management software (EzyVet, SmartFlow, Timeless)
- Assist Client Administrators as necessary
- Attending staff and individual meetings as scheduled Teamwork
- Participates in a positive manner in all group sizes.
- Refrains from participating in gossip‐leads by example.
- Supports team members by assisting other areas, is receptive to feedback and suggestions.
- Engages in active problem‐solving vs. Problem‐identifying.
- Makes suggestions related to client/patient service improvements and hospital efficiency.
- Willing to help teammates grow by teaching processes and techniques used in the ICU Knowledge/Skills
- Experience equivalent to job duties and responsibilities
- Excellent veterinary nursing and technical skills
- Excellent communication skills - written and verbal
- Strong computer skills
- Strong ability to multi‐task, delegate and oversee daily workflow
- Strong working knowledge of emergency veterinary medicine
- Strong work ethic and professionalism Physical
- Able to properly restrain dog and cat patients for veterinary care and procedures
- Able to stand, sit, bend, restrain, squat for extended periods of time
- Able to function within a busy, stressful work environment in a mature, professional manner
- Able to lift 60 lbs. in a safe manner
- Able to type, write and verbally converse
- Able to work the posted schedule Anticipated Schedule ICU Technicians will work three 12-hour shifts weekly, either a day or night shift but not a mixture. Benefits
