Job Description

Introduction The Associate Veterinarian works under the direct guidance and supervision of the Owner Doctor(s) of the Helping Paws Animal Hospital. The Associate Veterinarian provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for companion animals, focusing on preventative health, diagnostics, and general wellness. Responsibilities include routine exams, vaccinations, dental procedures, and soft-tissue surgeries like spays and neuters. No emergency medicine. Primary Job Responsibilities Examine, diagnose and treat animals for wellness, illness, injuries and medical conditions through medical, surgical and preventative care. Ability to perform diagnostic testing, interpret laboratory and imaging results and develop appropriate treatment plans. Administer anesthesia, perform surgical procedures such as spays and neuters and monitor patient recovery with support from the veterinary team. Educate clients on pet health, preventative care, treatment plans, nutrition and at-home care instructions. Maintain accurate medical records, complete required documentation and ensure proper follow-up care for patients. Provide compassionate patient care, including humane euthanasia, when appropriate. Collaborate with, train and support veterinary team members while promoting excellent client service and patient care standards. Participate in staff meetings, training, community outreach and other hospital initiatives as directed. Perform additional duties as assigned by management or ownership. Qualifications & Competencies Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree with an active California veterinary license. Strong knowledge of veterinary medicine, animal biology, diagnostics, surgery, anesthesia, pharmacology and preventative healthcare. Ability to interpret medical records, laboratory results, regulations, and procedural documents accurately. Skilled in the use, care and sterilization of veterinary instruments and medical equipment. Excellent communication, client service and interpersonal skills with the ability to educate clients and work collaboratively with team members. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, time management and organizational skills. Proficient computer skills for medical recordkeeping, diagnostic ordering and client communication. Manual dexterity and attention to detail required for examinations, treatments and surgical procedures. Commitment to practicing high-quality medicine, dentistry, and patient care while upholding veterinary ethics and supporting the mission and values of Helping Paws Animal Hospital. Strong written and verbal English communications skills, including proper grammar and professional correspondence. Essential Functions Provide high-quality veterinary medical and surgical care through diagnosis, treatment, spay/neuter procedures and dentistry services. Communicate effectively and compassionately with clients, patients and team members while maintaining professionalism and ethical standards. Perform physical examinations, diagnostic procedures, patient restraint and treatment with appropriate motor skills and attention to detail. Utilize critical thinking, sound judgement and problem-solving skills to develop and implement appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans. Adapt to a variety of clinical situations, incorporate new medical information and techniques and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Maintain the mental, emotional and professional capacity necessary to provide safe, effective patient care and foster positive team relationships. Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, multitasking ability and commitment to the mission and standards of the Helping Paws Animal Hospital. Physical Demands Primarily active role requiring prolonged standing and walking with occasional sitting. Frequent use of hands requiring fine motor control and dexterity. Visual acuity including close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception Occasional reaching, bending, lifting, or climbing. Verbal and listening acuity to converse with clients and staff. Ability to regularly lift up to 25 lbs.; occasionally lift 25-40 lbs.; lift 50+ lbs. with assistance Working Conditions While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients, infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises, bites, scratches and animal wastes; and possible exposure to contagious diseases. Federal and state animal health laws and regulations, including OSHA and DEA will be followed.
