Job Description

Associate Veterinarian — Small Animal (Large Animal Optional) | Independently Owned | No On-Call | $156K
  • 180K + Bonuses Slate Creek Animal Hospital is hiring a full-time or part-time Associate DVM to join our team in Shingle Springs, California — in the Sierra Nevada foothills, 45 minutes from Sacramento and under two hours from Lake Tahoe.
We're a four-doctor, independently owned practice with a recently renovated hospital, exceptional support staff, and a client base that's been with us across generations. New graduates and experienced veterinarians are equally welcome.
Who we are:
Slate Creek is a small, close-knit team — four DVMs, three RVTs, and five assistants who genuinely like each other and the work we do. We're doctor-owned, so the people making decisions about medicine, equipment, and how we treat each other are the same people seeing patients alongside you. We celebrate wins together, cover for each other when life happens, and we go home at 5 because the rest of the day belongs to us, and yours will too. If you've worked somewhere that called itself "family" but didn't act like it, we understand the skepticism. Come visit. Meet the team. Sit in on a day. You'll see what we mean.
Compensation:
Base salary: $156,000
  • 180,000 DOE Sign-on bonus Retention bonus Open to discussing terms that work for you
Benefits:
401(k) with employer match Health insurance Paid time off and paid CE days Annual CE allowance All licensing, DEA, AVMA, and CVMA dues covered Professional liability insurance covered Your schedule, your call: 3, 4, or 5-day workweek — whatever fits your life Clinic hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM-5 PM Saturdays are not required — available if you want the extra day, otherwise pass No on-call. No after-hours emergencies. No overnight shifts.
The practice:
Independently owned and doctor-led 4-DVM team: 2 full-time (1 small animal, 1 large animal) and 2 part-time 3 RVTs and 5 veterinary assistants Newly renovated hospital with 4 exam rooms In-house IDEXX laboratory Digital radiography (including a mobile unit for large animal work) Dental radiography and mobile dental unit Ultrasound Full surgical suite A comfortable appointment pace that lets you practice quality medicine without burnout Large animal opportunity (optional): The focus of this position is small animal, but if occasional large animal work appeals to you, we can offer that variety. We already have an established large animal client base and a full-time large animal DVM on staff who'd love to share cases with someone interested. Strictly small animal works just as well.
Mentorship for new graduates:
We offer structured mentorship programs in both small and large animal medicine. New grads are paired with one of our experienced DVMs and progress at the pace that fits you — not a rigid timeline. You'll never be the only doctor in the building, and you'll always have someone to turn to when you need a second set of eyes or a sounding board.
About the area:
Shingle Springs and Placerville sit in the heart of El Dorado County's Gold Country — wineries, hiking, and mountain biking out the back door, Folsom Lake within minutes, skiing at Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood about 90 minutes away, and Lake Tahoe under two hours. Real California lifestyle without Bay Area cost of living, and you're still 45 minutes from a major metro when you want it. Who we're looking for: DVM degree from an AVMA-accredited program California veterinary license (or eligibility) DEA license (or eligibility) New graduates and experienced veterinarians both encouraged to apply Someone who values collaborative team culture and quality medicine Let's talk! The right fit matters more to us than checking every box, so if this sounds close to what you're looking for, reach out and let's have a conversation. We'll respond within 48 hours, every time.
