at University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois, United States Job Description Staff Veterinarian - Emergency Room (ER) Veterinary Teaching Hospital Job SummaryThe Staff Veterinarian (ER) will serve as the primary case manager for emergency room cases during assigned shifts. This role is integral to the hospital's mission of providing high-quality emergency care while supporting the educational development of veterinary students, interns, and residents. The ER Veterinarian will work collaboratively with house officers and will have access to guidance from boarded Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) faculty as needed. Duties & Responsibilities Emergency Patient Care and Case Management
- Serve on a Patient Care Team as the primary clinician for emergency room cases during assigned shifts.
- Manage all phases of patient care including triage, diagnostics, treatment planning, and client communication.
- Ensure accurate, timely documentation of medical records in compliance with hospital policies and standards.
- Collaborate with ECC faculty and specialty services as needed to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Clinical Education and House Officer Supervision
- Work alongside and support veterinary students, interns, and residents in all aspects of emergency medicine and case management.
- Participate in clinical rounds, case discussions, service-specific training activities, and continuing education programs as required.
- Contribute to the educational mission of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital by serving as a mentor and role model for developing clinicians.
- Attend service and department meetings as required. Professional Development, Collaboration, and Administrative Duties
- Participate in service-specific continuing education and training requirements to maintain clinical competency.
- Contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment and foster inter-service communication and collaboration.
- Complete administrative responsibilities including scheduling, record compliance reviews, and departmental reporting as assigned.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to evidence-based practice standards within the ER service.
- DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college.
- Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Illinois.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in emergency veterinary medicine, or successful completion of a rotating internship preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong clinical expertise in emergency and critical care, with a commitment to high-quality, evidence-based medical practice.
- Demonstrated readiness to adapt clinical approaches and procedures in alignment with service-specific standards.
- Excellent communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to the educational mission of an academic veterinary teaching hospital.
