About the
Role:
The Emergency Veterinarian plays a critical role in providing immediate and expert medical care to animals experiencing urgent health crises. This position requires rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of emergency conditions to stabilize patients and improve outcomes. The veterinarian will work closely with veterinary technicians, support staff, and pet owners to deliver compassionate and effective care during high-stress situations. Additionally, the role involves making quick, informed decisions while managing multiple cases simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Ultimately, the Emergency Veterinarian ensures that animals receive timely interventions that can be life-saving and significantly enhance their quality of life.
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary school. Valid veterinary license to practice in Virginia. Experience in emergency or critical care veterinary medicine. Strong knowledge of veterinary pharmacology, diagnostics, and surgical techniques. Ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
Board certification or eligibility in Emergency and Critical Care (e.g., ACVECC). Advanced training or residency in emergency veterinary medicine. Experience with a variety of species including companion animals and exotic pets. Proficiency in advanced diagnostic imaging and laboratory interpretation. Strong leadership skills and experience in mentoring junior staff.
Responsibilities:
Perform emergency medical and surgical procedures on animals presenting with acute illnesses or injuries. Conduct thorough physical examinations and diagnostic testing to determine the nature and severity of emergencies. Stabilize critical patients through fluid therapy, pain management, and other life-support measures. Communicate clearly and empathetically with pet owners regarding their animal's condition, treatment options, and prognosis. Collaborate with veterinary technicians and other staff to ensure efficient workflow and high standards of patient care. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all emergency cases. Stay current with advances in emergency veterinary medicine and apply best practices to clinical care.
