Job Description
Do you enjoy soft tissue surgery and/or dentals? Do you want to make a positive impact in the community? Mountain View Humane is a non-profit dedicated to ending pet overpopulation in Southwest Virginia. We offer low cost spay/neuter services as well as wellness, dentistry, and euthanasia services. We are searching for an associate veterinarian who has a heart for the underserved population. Mountain View Humane offers 4 weeks of vacation, 2 weeks of sick leave, bereavement leave, pet bereavement leave, no weekends/on-call/holidays, and we close the entire week of Christmas! We also offer a 4-day work week with experienced LVTs and vet assistants. We are also open to hiring a part-time veterinarian if full-time is not an option. The associate veterinarian will be trained in high volume spay/neuter techniques, and will have an opportunity to perform a variety of soft tissue surgeries, if desired. An onboarding period is expected to train and increase surgical efficiency in HQHVSN. Even if you have never worked in a high-volume setting before, we can train the right candidate! Position Summary The Associate Veterinarian provides surgical and medical veterinary services in compliance with all rules, regulations, and laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States.
EDUCATIONAL OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an AVMA-accredited university or equivalent Virginia Veterinary License in good standing Current DEA license or eligible to obtain upon hireMEDICAL/SURGICAL
Examine animals pre-operatively to determine their ability to withstand anesthesia and surgery Perform surgical sterilizations and other surgical procedures as necessary on canine and feline patients Examine animals post-operatively to ensure appropriate recovery Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow up care Supervise appropriate handling and recording of controlled substances by Veterinary Technicians Supervise surgical rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery Perform wellness exams and preventative care appointments to include vaccinations, parasite and retroviral testing, home care recommendations, and veterinary care recommendations • Perform dental procedures on canine and feline patients, including appropriate extractions Review and interpret dental radiographs Prescribe appropriate treatments for dental/oral pathologies, including referral, if necessary Interpret blood work and other lab results and adjust surgical, dental, and medical treatments as necessary Collaborate with the Medical Director, Lead LVT, and LVT to ensure quality of the dental program. Continuously strive to deliver optimal client experience. Perform euthanasia on canine and feline patients using appropriate medical judgment and following ethical standardsLEADERSHIP
Act as a leader within the medical team to provide appropriate care for patients Provide medical insight of the clinic program, including evaluation of medical, surgical, and disease control protocols Collaborate with management to assess and implement standards of care protocols Ensure all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri-, and postoperative care of patients Other duties as assignedESSENTIAL SKILLS
Ability to work equally well independently and as part of a team. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Strong interest in animal welfare, spaying/neutering and serving communities. Ability to work in high-volume, fast-paced clinic environment. Ability to think quickly and remain calm in the event of an emergency.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds and for short distances and to humanely restrain an animal when necessary Ability to work standing for 8-plus hours, and work within a small space Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly Must be able to see fine detail in a variety of situations Must have good hearing including ability to distinguish changes in pitch Must have reasonable degree of agility to move through tightly cramped areas in various situations Must have the ability to handle and work around animals and chemicals/gases/cleaning products and sharps including needles and surgical bladesEMOTIONAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to work under stressful conditions and work efficiently and effectively under those conditions Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations (with training) Must be able to cope with death either due to surgical complication or euthanasia Ability to rapidly and accurately process information Ability to delegate tasks Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help Ability to control instinct (for example: while restraining it is most often required to tighten grip and NOT release the animal when they begin to struggle) Ability to make reasonable decisions Ability to cope with frustrating situations and remain calmBENEFITS
