Director of Veterinary Medicine Salary:

JOB SUMMARY
The Humane Society of Sheboygan County (HSSC) is a 501(c) 3 organization providing shelter and medical care for over 2,500 animals each year. HSSC intakes animals from Sheboygan County, overpopulated facilities, and hoarding/neglect cases. It provides a low-cost spay/neuter program to the public and a TNR program. HSSC is searching for a Director of Veterinary Medicine to provide on-site medical care and spay/neuter services to our shelter animals and is comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must be comfortable with pediatric spay/neuter, in heat spays, pregnant spays, feral cat spay/neuter, large dog surgeries, as well as other medical procedures. Additionally, HSSC occasionally houses small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and birds so some experience with small animals is preferred.
Responsibilities include:
examining and treating a variety of illnesses and injuries; performing spay/neuter surgeries (HQHVSN experience a plus); diagnostic testing; communicating medical plans and ensuring follow up care for shelter animals; adhering to contagious disease protocols; performing occasional euthanasia; keeping thorough medical records; providing input on and updating medical protocols; managing a staff of four (including one part-time veterinarian) and stay within budgetary guidelines by by using effective and efficient medical judgement. Candidates must adhere to and maintain the established standards in accordance with shelter and state policy, and help our animals stay as comfortable as possible while in our care, in accordance with the duties or limitations set by the Wisconsin Veterinary Examining Board. Candidates must possess a DVM degree and be licensed (or have the ability to obtain a license) to practice in the State of Wisconsin. Candidates must possess (or have the ability to obtain) DEA licensure for controlled substances. Candidates must be a team player with extraordinary communication and problem-solving skills and have a passion for both animals and people. Previous shelter medicine and HQHVSN surgery experience required.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrate safe and appropriate animal handling and restraint. Clinic staff annual reviews Attend weekly rounds / pathway planning meeting Minimize disease transmission by adhering to safety and biosecurity protocols. Ensure prompt and accurate entries of medical information in shelter management system Dispense medications as needed. Communicate with and educate shelter staff, volunteers, and fosters regarding veterinary-related information, as appropriate. Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee will be required to handle, restrain, lift and have contact with a variety of animals. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to and comes in close contact with a variety of animals; therefore, the employee cannot be allergic to these animals or must have ability to control those allergies. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee must be able to bend and use legs, arm, and back muscles without discomfort.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Radiation equipment is in use on-site. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee may potentially be exposed to zoonotic disease, encounter scenarios of animal suffering or abuse, and be witness to humane euthanasia / cremation process / animal death.
