Job Title:
Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description This role operates heavy civil construction equipment to support stormwater pollution prevention, erosion control, and site civil closeout activities on large-scale solar construction projects. You will perform tasks such as hydroseeding, erosion control installation, placing hay, grading, and working closely with laborers to deliver high-quality, production-focused work in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities Operate excavators and dozers to perform fine grading, earthmoving, and site preparation for civil closeout activities. Operate articulated dump trucks to transport soil, aggregate, and other materials safely and efficiently across the job site. Support stormwater pollution prevention and erosion control tasks, including hydroseeding, laying down hay, shoveling, raking, and installing gabion basins. Coordinate with on-site laborers and other equipment operators to complete daily production goals and maintain smooth workflow. Follow detailed site plans, grades, and GPS guidance (where applicable) to achieve precise cuts, fills, and finished grades. Inspect equipment daily, report issues promptly, and help maintain equipment in safe, working condition. Adhere to all site safety rules and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and safe operating practices. Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality in a production-based environment where consistent presence is critical. Work significant overtime as needed, including occasional weekends, to meet project schedules and production targets. Perform work outdoors in varying weather conditions while maintaining focus on quality, safety, and productivity. Essential Skills At least 3 years of experience operating an excavator or dozer, with experience on both strongly preferred. At least 3 years of experience operating an articulated dump truck in a civil construction or dirt work environment. Demonstrated fine grade ability using dozers and/or excavators to achieve precise site grades and finishes. 3rd party certifications for bulldozer, excavator, or articulated haul truck operation. Experience with heavy equipment in civil construction, dirt work, or similar environments. Strong safety awareness and working knowledge of construction safety practices, supported by OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training. Ability and willingness to work significant overtime and weekends when required by the project schedule. Consistent reliability, with strong attendance and punctuality in a production-based work environment. Ability to work effectively as part of a site crew, communicating clearly with supervisors, laborers, and other operators. Physical ability to work outdoors, perform tasks such as shoveling and raking, and tolerate hot and humid conditions. Additional Skills & Qualifications Solar construction experience is a plus and will help you adapt quickly to project requirements. Familiarity with GPS-guided equipment operation is beneficial for achieving accurate grades. Background in erosion control, hydroseeding, and stormwater pollution prevention measures is advantageous. Experience working on large-scale construction or energy projects is preferred. Strong attention to detail and quality mindset when performing grading and civil closeout work. Why Work Here? Work Environment You will work on multiple civil closeout sites for large solar construction projects in a new construction environment. The role is entirely field-based and outdoors, with exposure to the elements, including very hot and humid conditions during the summer. The standard schedule is approximately 50 hours per week, typically from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM with an hour lunch break and short morning and afternoon breaks. You will operate heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, and articulated dump trucks and work closely with on-site laborers to complete daily tasks. The work environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety; appropriate personal protective equipment is required at all times, including hard hat, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, reflective vest, and gloves. Work clothing suitable for a construction site is expected, and safety compliance is critical, with repeated safety violations resulting in termination. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Farnham, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
