Aug 31, 2026 Job Description Bi-County Collaborative is seeking a compassionate and committed Special Education Teacher to serve high school students (grades 9-12) with multiple disabilities in a supportive and structured public day school setting. This position involves delivering individualized instruction that promotes functional academics, communication, life skills, and increased independence, while ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned with each student's strengths, needs, and post-secondary goals
  • Deliver daily instruction in functional academics, daily living skills, adaptive behavior, communication, mobility, and social-emotional learning
  • Collaborate with related service providers (e.g., occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language therapy, nursing) to support student access and participation
  • Use specialized teaching strategies (e.g., visual supports, augmentative/alternative communication, sensory integration, task analysis) tailored to student needs
  • Foster a positive and structured classroom culture that promotes independence, dignity, and engagement
  • Manage a team of paraprofessionals, ensuring consistent implementation of student supports, hygiene, and data collection
  • Implement and monitor behavior support plans (BSPs) and use positive behavior supports (PBIS) to reinforce appropriate behaviors
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress reports, IEP updates, and data collection on student goals
  • Communicate regularly with families and participate in IEP meetings, student review meetings, and multidisciplinary team discussions
  • Provide opportunities for community-based instruction, vocational skills, and transition planning where applicable
  • Ensure a safe physical environment, supporting students with mobility devices, personal care needs, and medical accommodations
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required - Master's degree preferred
  • MA teaching license in moderate/severe special needs
  • The collaborative will consider supporting a candidate without Severe Intellectual Disabilities (severe/profound) certification if the candidate holds a different special education certification and is willing to obtain the Severe Intellectual Disabilities certification with employer support
  • Excellent oral and written communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working with students with significant disabilities (intellectual, physical, sensory, medical) at the secondary level
  • Understands all parts of the IEP process
  • Familiar with working with students who have Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)
  • Knowledge of assistive technology, AAC devices, and adapted curriculum
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with a team of support staff
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs and assist students with mobility and daily living tasks
  • Active, hands-on role that includes sitting on the floor, standing, bending, and moving throughout the day
  • Frequent lifting, transferring, or physical assistance may be required
  • Training in sensory supports, medical protocols, and personal care procedures
  • Assist students with application and use of adaptive equipment like AFO's, standers, gait trainers, and other mobility or positioning devices
