To Be Determined Job Description A High School Trap Shooting Coach is responsible for leading a safe and educational competitive shooting program. Unlike traditional field sports, this role centers heavily on firearm safety, specialized range coordination, and individual marksmanship development within a team setting. Core Responsibilities
Safety Oversight:
Enforce all firearm safety rules and range regulations at all times. This includes ensuring the safe handling, storage, and transport of firearms and ammunition.
Skill Development:
Instruct athletes on shooting fundamentals such as proper stance, footwork, shoulder mounting, and "mind-eye" coordination.
Range Management:
Coordinate practice times with local sportsman's clubs, manage target loading (filling trap houses), and ensure all equipment is functional.
Administrative Duties:
Register athletes with local leagues Secure and distribute shotgun shells Submit weekly scores and maintain accurate performance records.
Team Leadership:
Recruit students, organize annual safety meetings, and promote sportsmanship and ethical conduct. Qualifications & Requirements
Certifications:
Most schools require NFHS Coach Education Training, First Aid/CPR, and specialized firearm safety instructor certification.
Experience:
Strong technical knowledge of trap shooting is essential; previous coaching or competitive shooting experience is preferred.
Age:
Many state associations require coaches to be at least 21 years old due to firearm handling regulations.
Soft Skills:
Ability to motivate high schoolers, manage budgets, and maintain professional communication with parents and school administrators. Physical Demands Coaches must be able to stand for long periods outdoors in various weather conditions, lift up to 30 pounds (such as cases of ammunition or targets), and possess the manual dexterity to operate and repair shooting equipment.
