Horizontal Directional Drill Operator Job Description This profile is designed to help promote job opportunities at Miller Pipeline, provide ample information to evaluate job performance and determine training needs of employees as well as developmental opportunities for advancement preparation. Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator
Department:
Gas Distribution, Construction and Maintenance

Superintendent
Subordinates:
N/A Job Purpose Set up and operate drilling equipment in order to install underground pipeline or cable. Essential Responsibilities Drive or guide drilling equipment into position. Connect ancillary items to equipment. Attach drilling head or reamer to machine. Move clutch and throttle in a safe manner to control rotation and feed of drill head into ground. Safely connect additional lengths of drill rod as bit advances. Use locating equipment to locate, guide, and control direction and depth of drill head. Accurately mark location with paint. Carefully withdraw drill rod from hole after specified length has been reached and pull pipeline and tracer wire or cable through hole. Lubricate machine, perform preventative maintenance and replace parts. Operate pump to move water and/or drill fluid down borehole to cool drill head and maintain bore as necessary. Qualifications Education and Certifications
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent. Class A CDL with air and tanker endorsements. Maintain proper Operator Qualifications as required by the company.

Required:
Read documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Speak effectively to other employees or groups of customers. Handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

— Core Competencies Leadership Communication Conflict Resolution Essential Functions While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, walk, climb or balance, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, explosives, and vibration. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanic parts and weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Employees in this job classification are required to work extended hours on a regular basis, must be flexible with the work schedule, be able to handle stressful conditions due to productivity and time constraints, and be willing to travel regionally.
