PART-TIME PASTRY ASSISTANT / JUNIOR PASTRY COOK
Otok Bakery | Hoboken, NJ Otok Bakery is looking for a motivated, dependable, and self-directed pastry professional to join our team. This is not a position for someone who needs constant instruction or supervision. We are a small team, and the right candidate must be comfortable taking ownership of their work, staying productive independently, and solving problems as they arise. You will report directly to the Owner and work under the supervision of our Pastry Chef. While training will be provided, you will regularly be responsible for executing production shifts on your own with minimal oversight. We are looking for someone who sees what needs to be done and does it. Position Details Approximately 20 hours per week 3 shifts per week Must be available both weekdays and weekends Shift start time: 6:00 AM Part-time position with potential for growth Responsibilities Prepare and bake pastries, cookies, cakes, croissants, and other bakery products Follow recipes and production schedules accurately Complete opening production independently Maintain quality, consistency, and presentation standards Keep workstations clean, organized, and food-safe at all times Monitor inventory and communicate product or ingredient needs Assist with seasonal menu development and special projects Support overall kitchen operations and production goals What We're Looking For Strong work ethic and personal accountability Ability to work independently without constant direction Excellent organizational and time-management skills Dependable and consistently punctual Positive attitude and willingness to learn Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment Takes initiative and looks for solutions instead of waiting for instructions Team player who accepts feedback and continually strives to improve Preferred Qualifications Culinary or pastry school student or graduate Previous bakery, pastry, restaurant, or production kitchen experience Experience with laminated doughs, cakes, cookies, breads, or viennoiserie ServSafe or Food Handler certification preferred The Ideal Candidate We would rather hire a highly motivated culinary student with exceptional work ethic than an experienced baker who lacks initiative. The ideal candidate is curious, hardworking, organized, and genuinely passionate about baking. They take pride in their work, notice details, and understand that consistency matters. They are comfortable working independently and do not need someone standing over their shoulder throughout a shift.
