SUMMARY OF POSITION
: A Riding Instructor assists the Barn Manager in planning and implementing a successful riding program in accordance with American Camp Association (ACA) and Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA). This includes delivering a program that provides a quality, creative, challenging, and progressive riding program to the campers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assumes responsibility for the safety of the campers in all situations through preventative and/or appropriate action. Delivers the equestrian program, including group and individual riding lessons, equine care, and barn management sessions. Assesses rider ability to determine level of experience. Assesses soundness and riding level of horses and maintains records. Assists the Barn Manager in herd management including feeding, watering, grooming, and exercising horses. Maintains awareness of camper and staff behavior always, enforcing safety regulations, and emergency procedures. Cleans and organizes barn, arena, trail system, and assists in cleaning camp. Participates in all-camp activities such as campfires, flag ceremonies, and programs, including meals unless on time-off. Assists with camper units as needed to cover breaks or assist with incidents apart from scheduled break time. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
At least 18 years of age. Member of GSUSA or willingness to become so. Belief in the mission of GSUSA and GSGI. Experience working with horses and teaching others to ride. Demonstrates sound judgment and problem-solving skills. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Certified or willingness to become certified in CPR/First Aid. Interest in caring for children in an outdoor setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Able to walk and stand for long periods of time on walkways and trails that may be uneven. Able to carry, lift, push, pull, or otherwise move heavy objects, supplies, or luggage. Able to work in extreme weather and temperatures daily. Able to recognize, respond to and care for visible and verbal signs of children's and equine distress. Able to share living space with others and eat meals in a large, noisy environment. Able to address stressful situations appropriately in a fast-paced, interactive environment. Emotionally resilient and capable of appropriate and sustained mental, emotional and social interactions in a constantly changing, youth-centered and community living setting.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The work week is generally Sunday-Friday, with some Saturdays required. Hours are irregular and extended based on camp needs. Requested time off will be coordinated with the Camp Director. Cell phone usage is extremely limited and may not be used outside of the staff lounge area. Extreme weather and temperatures may be encountered daily. Position includes shared living quarters with other staff, following GSUSA guidelines and requires residency at assigned camp. This position is an 'on-site', 'on-duty' job 24 hours a day, except on scheduled time-off.
