Job Description
This is a full-time on-site role for a Sommelier at our Richmond, VA location. The Sommelier position at NAPA Kitchen and Wine is best suited for a guest‑facing wine professional who elevates the dining experience through exceptional hospitality, deep product knowledge, and seamless collaboration with the front-of-house team. This role supports the Beverage Director in maintaining the integrity of the wine program, curating memorable guest interactions, and ensuring the smooth operation of the wine lounge, patio and dining room. The Sommelier embodies the NAPA Kitchen and Wine commitment to approachability, education, and warm, polished service. Key Responsibilities Guest Experience & Service Provide table side wine guidance with an approachable, guest‑friendly style that reflects the hospitality standards of NAPA Kitchen and Wine. Lead wine service for the dining room, patio and wine lounge, including bottle presentation, decanting, and pairing recommendations. Support servers by assisting with wine questions, upselling opportunities, and guest engagement. Host tastings, flights, and special wine experiences with confidence and clarity. Wine Program Operations Maintain working knowledge of all wines by the glass, bottle selections, monthly features, and wine club offerings. Assist with EnoMatic machine operation, including programming, maintenance, and daily quality checks. Ensure proper storage, rotation, and organization of wine inventory. Conduct opening and closing duties related to the wine program, including restocking, polishing glassware, and preparing the wine lounge for service. Collaboration & Communication Communicate regularly with the Beverage Director regarding product needs, guest feedback, and program opportunities. Work closely with the front-of-house team to ensure consistent wine service standards across all shifts. Participate in pre‑shift meetings, staff education, and ongoing training initiatives. Support cross‑department communication with the Home Office team when needed (Graphic Design, Marketing, etc.). Education & Training Serve as an in‑house resource for wine knowledge, helping to educate and empower the front-of-house team. Assist in staff tastings, training sessions, and rollout of new wine features or flights. Stay current on wine regions, trends, and producers relevant to the NKW program. Qualifications Prior experience in wine service, beverage hospitality, or a related front-of-house role. Strong foundational wine knowledge; WSET Level 2 or CMS Certified Sommelier Ability to communicate wine concepts in a warm, accessible, and engaging way. Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, guest‑centric environment. Professional presence, strong teamwork skills, and a commitment to the service culture at NAPA Kitchen and Wine. Physical & Operational Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry wine cases (up to 40 lbs). Availability for nights, weekends, and special events.
