Job Description

The Cook / Café Assistant supports daily food service operations at the Gator Café by assisting with food preparation, service, and kitchen organization. This position plays a key role in providing quality food and a welcoming dining experience for students, faculty, staff, and guests while maintaining food safety and cleanliness standards. The position reports to the Head Cook. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist with food preparation, cooking, and assembly according to established recipes and instructions. Support daily café operations, including food service, restocking, and customer interaction. Assist with basic cooking tasks such as chopping, portioning, grilling, baking, and plating. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of food preparation areas, equipment, and dining spaces. Follow food safety, sanitation, and health guidelines at all times. Assist with receiving, storing, and rotating food supplies. Operate kitchen equipment safely and appropriately. Support catering services and special events as needed. Work collaboratively with the Head Cook and other café staff to ensure efficient service. Provide friendly and professional customer service. Other Job Functions Perform other appropriate duties as may be determined by the Head Cook or Director of Hospitality and Events. Flexible hours may be required. Attend professional development to ensure quality standards for all food preparation are met. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Current food safety certification (e.g., ServSafe) or ability to obtain upon hire. Basic knowledge of food preparation and kitchen safety practices. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Strong work ethic and willingness to learn. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in food service, cafeteria, café, or restaurant settings. Experience working with the public or in a customer service role. Physical and Work Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to work variable schedules, including mornings, afternoons, and occasional evenings or weekends. Work is performed primarily in a kitchen environment with exposure to heat, cold, and standard food service equipment. Work Environment The Cook / Café Assistant works in a food service environment that prioritizes safety, cleanliness, and customer service while supporting a positive campus dining experience
