Owner of Southern Steer Butcher Surprise About Us Southern Steer Butcher is bringing a premium neighborhood butcher shop experience to Surprise — focused on high-quality meats, house-made specialties, prepared foods, and exceptional customer service. We are seeking an experienced, dependable, and team-oriented Meat Cutter / Butcher who takes pride in craftsmanship, food quality, cleanliness, and customer interaction. This is an opportunity to help build a new store from the ground up and become part of a strong long-term team culture. Position Summary The Meat Cutter / Butcher is responsible for cutting, trimming, preparing, packaging, and merchandising meats according to Southern Steer standards while delivering excellent customer service and maintaining the highest food safety practices. This role requires attention to detail, consistency, speed, cleanliness, and professionalism in a fast-paced retail food environment. Key ResponsibilitiesMeat Cutting & Production Cut, trim, portion, and prepare beef, pork, poultry, and specialty meat products Prepare customer orders accurately and efficiently Assist with marinating, seasoning, skewering, and value-added products Maintain attractive and fully stocked meat cases and displays Follow proper product rotation and freshness standards Minimize waste and maximize product yield Food Safety & Sanitation Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures Maintain a clean and organized cutting room and prep area Properly clean and maintain knives, saws, grinders, slicers, and equipment Ensure compliance with health department and company standards Customer Service Assist customers with product selection and cooking recommendations Deliver friendly, knowledgeable, and professional service Help educate customers on cuts, preparation methods, and meal ideas Support front counter operations when needed Team & Operations Work collaboratively with store leadership and team members Assist with receiving, stocking, inventory, and prep production Support opening and closing responsibilities Help maintain a positive, accountable, and professional work environment Qualifications Required Previous meat cutting or butcher experience Knowledge of meat cuts, trimming, portioning, and handling procedures Ability to safely use knives and meat processing equipment Strong attention to detail and food safety practices Ability to stand for long periods and lift 50+ pounds Reliable attendance and strong work ethic Ability to work weekends and flexible retail hours Preferred Retail butcher shop or grocery meat department experience Experience with specialty meats and value-added products Customer-facing food service experience ServSafe Food Safety Certification Required Prior to Hire ServSafe Manager Certification required prior to hire Compensation & Benefits Competitive pay based on experience Growth opportunities within the company Team-oriented culture Opportunity to help launch and grow a new premium butcher shop Employee discount opportunities What We're Looking For We are looking for professionals who: Take pride in their craft Work with urgency and consistency Value cleanliness and organization Enjoy interacting with customers Want to help build a strong local business and team culture If you are passionate about quality food, great service, and being part of a growing business, we'd love to speak with you.
