Position Overview:
The Meat Cutter Apprentice is a structured, entry-level training role designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience required to become a fully proficient Meat Cutter. Over the course of a one-year apprenticeship, the apprentice will receive hands-on training, formal feedback, and progressive skill development under the guidance of the Meat Manager and experienced team members.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
(not an exhaustive list) 1. Assist in preparing, cutting, trimming, and packaging meat products according to department standards 2. Learn and apply proper knife handling, cutting techniques, and safe operation of equipment 3. Support product merchandising by stocking, rotating, and maintaining visually appealing displays 4. Ensure all products are properly labeled, priced, and meet quality standards 5. Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment: • Clean cases, shelves, bins, tables, coolers, and floors on a regular schedule • Follow strict sanitation practices, including frequent handwashing and use of protective gloves 6. Follow all food safety and workplace safety procedures and guidelines 7. Assist with inventory management, including receiving, storing, and rotating product properly
Learning & Development Focus:
1. Progressive training in meat fabrication, trimming, portioning, and presentation 2. Developing extensive knowledge of meat products, vendors, and sourcing 3. Building expertise in cooking methods and product utilization to better serve customers 4. Food safety, sanitation standards, and regulatory compliance 5. Qualifications Required Skills/Experience and Attributes:
1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred 2. Must be 18 years or older 3. Ability to represent the Co-op in a positive manner 4. Demonstrated interest in learning a skilled trade within the food or grocery industry 5. Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively in a team environment 6. Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality 7. Basic math skills for weighing, portioning, and pricing 8. Previous retail, food service, or grocery experience preferred but not required
