The Barton Center for Diabetes Education is hiring both Head Chefs and Camp Cooks to support our residential summer camps for children living with Type 1 diabetes. Our kitchen team prepares and serves ~20,000 meals over 5 weeks, in an environment where food is critical to health, safety, and the camper experience. Kitchen Team Structure We've introduced a clear, supportive team model: Kitchen Services Director
- overall leadership (already hired) Head Chefs (1 per camp)
- shift and kitchen leadership Camp Cooks (teams of 3-4 per camp)
- prep, cooking, and service You'll be hired into either a Head Chef or Camp Cook role based on your experience.
Head Chef ($23/hour) Role Overview Head Chefs lead day-to-day kitchen operations—owning execution, managing staff during shifts, and ensuring meals are delivered safely and on time. Key Responsibilities Lead preparation and service of all meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner + snacks Supervise and direct Camp Cooks during shifts Manage kitchen flow, timing, and quality control Execute menus (including allergen and carb considerations) Ensure food safety, sanitation, and compliance standards Troubleshoot operational challenges in real time Ideal Candidate 2+ years kitchen or food service leadership experience Strong leadership and organizational skills Experience in high-volume kitchens preferred Calm under pressure and solutions-oriented Camp Cook ($18
- 20/hour) Role Overview Camp Cooks are the backbone of the kitchen—handling prep, cooking, service, and cleanup to ensure every meal runs smoothly.
Key Responsibilities Prepare and serve meals and snacks Follow recipes, portioning, and Head Chef direction Support allergen-safe and dietary-specific meal prep Maintain clean and organized kitchen spaces Assist with inventory, stocking, and deliveries Follow all food safety and sanitation standards Ideal Candidate Kitchen or food service experience preferred Strong work ethic and reliability Team-oriented with a positive attitude Comfortable in a fast-paced environment What Makes This Different Mission-driven work supporting kids with Type 1 diabetes Fast-paced, team-oriented environment (not a typical restaurant job) Day-to-evening shifts (no late-night service) Opportunity to build skills in high-volume, structured kitchen operations
