On an average day, we welcome nearly 200 guests and provide them with nutritious meals, showers, laundry, and access to doctors, dentists, lawyers, and housing providers through our free clinics. Our Bridge Housing Campus is currently under construction in Core City and is the centerpiece of our plan to end chronic homelessness in Detroit. We have been serving Detroit's most vulnerable citizens for over 30 years, and we envision a Detroit without homelessness, where every person has the resources for sustained stability.
Position Name & Description Position Summary:
The Pope Francis Center is seeking a Seasonal, Part-time Sous Chef to join our team at the warming center. The Sous Chef will play a crucial role in our mission to provide warmth and nourishment to those we serve. This individual will assist in preparing and presenting high-quality meals, collaborating closely with the head chef to ensure that food prepared on campus is transported effectively and served in alignment with the chef's specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of meals, ensuring high standards of taste and presentation.
  • Work in tandem with the chef to coordinate the transportation and service of meals.
  • Manage tasks and oversee the clean-up process in the kitchen, maintaining a hygienic and organized environment.
  • Engage volunteers in the food preparation process, providing guidance and support to ensure a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Participate actively in team meetings and training sessions, contributing to the continuous improvement of our services.
  • Provide support to program staff on the floor as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Perform other related duties as required, adhering to the center's policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations within the kitchen area.
Requirements:
  • Proven experience as a Sous Chef or similar role in a professional kitchen.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong leadership skills to manage kitchen staff and volunteers effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for a diverse team environment.
  • Commitment to the center's values and a passion for serving the community.
Qualifications:
  • Culinary school diploma or equivalent professional experience.
  • Knowledge of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with industry's best practices and a desire to implement them within our program.
