Job Description

Overview St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen is seeking a dedicated and dependable Assistant Chef to support daily kitchen operations under the direction of the Chef. This role is essential in helping prepare nutritious meals for 100-275 individuals per service. The Assistant Chef may also step into a leadership role by supervising staff and volunteers and overseeing kitchen operations in the Chef's absence. This is a great opportunity for someone passionate about food service and community impact. Key Responsibilities Assist the Chef with daily kitchen operations Prepare hot, nutritious meals in high-volume settings (100-275 servings) Train and supervise paid staff and volunteers Ensure food freshness and safely discard unusable items Maintain compliance with all health and safety regulations Keep kitchen equipment clean, sanitized, and in good working condition Help manage kitchen workflow and dining service in the Chef's absence Performance Expectations Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment Collaborate respectfully and positively with team members and volunteers Follow all sanitation and food safety standards Support consistent quality and execution of meals Assist with inventory, prep work, and daily setup/breakdown Prioritize safety for yourself and others at all times Qualifications Previous supervisory or team leadership experience required Strong communication and organizational skills Knowledge of FDA and USDA food handling guidelines preferred ServSafe Food Handler Certification (required upon hire or shortly after) Ability to stand, bend, kneel, lift, and perform physical kitchen tasks Skills & Experience 2-5 years of experience in food service Hands-on experience with kitchen equipment Knowledge of culinary techniques Strong leadership and time management skills Understanding of sanitation standards and regulations Schedule Requirements 20-26 hours per week (schedule coordinated with Chef and Executive Director) Kitchen operates 365 days per year Must be available for weekends, evenings, and holidays
