Table 1888 is a new chapter in one of Harrisonburg's most iconic dining spaces. Located within the historic Joshua Wilton House, we are building a restaurant that blends warm hospitality, thoughtful service, and elevated food and beverage experiences. Our cuisine draws inspiration from French traditions while remaining approachable, seasonal, and rooted in the Shenandoah Valley. Position Summary We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Assistant Pastry Chef to support our Pastry Chef in creating and executing the desserts, breads, and pastries that round out the Table 1888 experience. This position is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in baking and pastry who is passionate about the craft and eager to grow in a kitchen that values technique, precision, and creativity. Pastry rewards consistency and care. Whether laminating dough for the morning's viennoiserie, tempering chocolate for a plated dessert, or finishing a delicate component during a busy dinner service, every item should reflect the standards and vision of Table 1888. The ideal candidate is reliable, precise, passionate about pastry, and committed to helping the team deliver exceptional experiences every night. What You'll Do Prepare and execute pastries, desserts, breads, and components according to recipes and standards Support the Pastry Chef with daily production, mise en place, and station setup Execute plated desserts during service with consistency, urgency, and attention to detail Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient pastry station Ensure proper food handling, storage, labeling, and sanitation procedures Monitor product quality, freshness, and inventory; communicate issues proactively Contribute ideas for seasonal specials and assist with menu development as directed Help manage par levels and assist with receiving, stocking, and organizing pastry inventory Work collaboratively with the Pastry Chef and culinary team to maintain smooth kitchen operations Follow all health department and food safety regulations Contribute to a positive and professional kitchen culture Required Strong work ethic and positive attitude A solid foundation in baking and pastry fundamentals Ability to follow recipes with precision and consistency Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Dependability and punctuality Ability to stand for extended periods Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Commitment to cleanliness, organization, and food safety Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and brunch Preferred Previous pastry, baking, or restaurant kitchen experience Experience with doughs, laminated pastries, custards, and plated desserts Familiarity with French pastry techniques (viennoiserie, pâte à choux, tempering, etc.) Culinary or pastry school education or equivalent experience Desire to grow professionally within the hospitality industry What We Offer Competitive pay based on experience Opportunities for advancement and skill development Professional kitchen environment focused on learning and growth Employee dining discounts Consistent year-round employment The opportunity to help build a new restaurant from the ground up Our Kitchen Philosophy At Table 1888, we believe great food begins with great fundamentals.
