Geriatric Care Attendant (GCA) Essential Functions Receive assignments Perform assigned duties in accordance with our established policies and procedures, nursing care procedures, and our safety rules and regulations Verify the identification of a resident before serving food, etc. to assure that appropriate care is being provided to the Correct Resident Perform duties as assigned by
DON/ADON
Assist residents with identifying food arrangements (i.e. informing blind residents of where food is located on tray) Assist with trays and feeding of residents. Removing trays when resident is finished eating. Perform after meal care as required (cleaning residents/ hands, face, clothing, etc.) Assist in preparing residents for meals (taking to and from dining room, serving trays, placing bibs, assisting in feeding and/or cutting foods, supervision in dining room, etc.) Residents' food intake rating Serve drinking water as required. Ensure pitchers are cleaned and filled with fresh drinking water daily and labeled appropriately Make unoccupied beds, clean bedside tables, clean bedrails, etc. as well as other housekeeping duties that relate to Nursing Care Procedures Report all complaints to ADON or DON Report any resident leaving the premises, attempting to leave the premises, or who has left the premises to the nurse immediately. Assure the nurses' call system is attached to the bed when residents are bedfast and within reach at all times. Report any resident abuse immediately to the licensed nurse (i.e. harsh/abusive language, unnecessary roughness, etc.) Keep supply room and work areas clean Wash hands after caring for each resident Follow infection control procedures, as established by the facility, when isolation techniques are necessary Ensure resident's rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property, and civil rights, including the right to wage a complaint are followed at all times Maintain Confidentiality of pertinent resident care information to ensure resident rights are protected (including HIPAA) Report all accidents/incidents, regardless of how minor, to the licensed nurse as soon as possible Assure work/assignment areas are clean and equipment, supplies, etc. are properly stored before leaving such areas on breaks, at the end of the work day, etc. Offer appropriate residents in-between Snacks/Supplements Geriatric Care Attendant (GCA) Non-Essential Functions Perform other duties as assigned. Professional Requirements Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Complete annual education requirements. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Wear identification while on duty. Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations. Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times. Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business practices. Communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the organization. Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. Attend regular staff meetings and in-services. Geriatric Care Attendant (GCA) Qualifications Must possess, at a minimum, 10th grade education. Preferably high school diploma or GED On the job training provided for specific nonprofessional duties Heimlich Maneuver Training Paid Feeding Assistant Training Program in the State Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Must possess a sincere desire to serve the ill, aged, and infirm Must possess the ability to work harmoniously with other personnel. Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care and maintaining a sound operation. Must be thoroughly familiar with the laws, regulations, and guidelines governing the release of information. Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle personnel based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning. Must possess the ability to seek our new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices. Must be able to maintain good personnel relations and employee morale. Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace. Must possess a thorough knowledge of principles of effective communication, mass media, advertising, policies, education, community relations, demonstration, organization structure, social and activity services, government relations, etc., as they relate to nursing facility operations. Must possess the ability to plan, organize and effectively present ideals and concepts to community groups/agencies. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Must possess the ability to assimilate information from a variety of sources, analyze information and make recommendations to the Administrator. Must possess the ability to establish, implement and maintain effective marketing and public relations program. Must have excellent driving record with DMV. Geriatric Care Attendant (GCA) Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies. May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations. Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds of force frequently or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects Ability to sit for long periods of time Ability to work at a production rate pace to meet deadlines as communicated by Administrator
