Technical Proficiency Full Job Description Job Description Phlebotomist Purpose:
Phlebotomist efficiently and accurately obtain blood samples via appropriate collection procedures and ensures highest specimen integrity on patients who are seen, served, and treated by North Texas Preferred Health Partners (NTPHP). The position reports to the NTPHP location leader. On occasion, Phlebotomist may also be asked to perform non-clinical responsibilities to ensure continuity of operations throughout NTPHP.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Explain blood draw procedures and answer patient questions. Reassure patients and help them relax Verify patient information and label blood samples properly. Accurately update patient information in the database Determine correct venipuncture method based on patient age and health. Find veins suitable for puncture, and collect specimen with minimal patient discomfort Gather medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials, and other equipment. Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples during the draw. Label samples correctly, and send or deliver them for testing. Ensure specimen integrity by adhering to the laboratory's procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing Follow laboratory policies and procedures to include laboratory programs, quality control, and quality assurance Understand and follow all safety, infection control, and OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen guidelines Work with NTPHP physicians and follow their directions at all times. Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests Utilize technical skills and abilities to accurately handle and process specimens: Follow laboratory procedures for specimen collection and handling Correctly identify patient and properly label specimens Correctly identify and utilize proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test type Follow appropriate guidelines as established by the laboratory for missed draws recollects, or difficult sticks Maintain sanitary work environment and clean common space areas, including waiting room Protect patient's rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information Provide coverage for other clinical team members, as needed, by placing patient's needs above all others Identify need for improvement in office processes and recommend solutions Other duties as assigned
Experience and Qualifications Required:
At least two (2) years experience, preferably three plus (3+) years as Phlebotomist High school diploma or GED required Experience with EMR , eClinical Works a plus Computer proficient, typing proficiency, software knowledge Able to work with confidential material and follow HIPPA guidelines
Physical Demands:
Coordination, manual, and physical dexterity sufficient to properly and adequately use various items of medical equipment and office equipment as required of the position or directed by the Laboratory Director. The position may involve sitting, standing, bending, and stooping.
