Food Handler Certification Full Job Description Job Summary:
We're seeking a reliable cook / prep cook with experience or strong interest in Ethiopian food to prepare daily menu items, maintain kitchen cleanliness, and assist with plating and service. Injera is supplied by an outside vendor; injera baking is not required.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare ingredients and making place for wats, tibs, salads, sauces, and vegetarian dishes. Cook and finish menu items to recipe specifications with consistent portioning and timing. Work with traditional Ethiopian spice blends and bases (berbere, mitmita, niter kibbeh, awaze). Assemble and plate injera-based platters and combo meals attractively for dine-in, takeout, and delivery. Monitor food quality, freshness, temperature control, and proper storage/rotation (FIFO). Clean and sanitize workstations, equipment, and utensils; follow health-code standards. Assist with inventory, receiving deliveries (including injera shipments), and basic stock ordering as needed. Communicate with front-of-house about menu changes, timing, and special requests. Follow all safety and allergen protocols; accommodate vegetarian/vegan and common dietary restrictions.
Qualifications:
1+ year kitchen experience; experience with Ethiopian cuisine preferred but not required. Familiarity or willingness to learn traditional Ethiopian spice profiles and cooking techniques. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, stand for long periods, and lift 25-50 lbs. Strong attention to detail, clean work habits, and good time management. Food handler's card/ServSafe certification preferred or willingness to obtain. Team player with good communication; knowledge of Amharic is a plus but not required.
