Dietary Cook - Long-Term Care Facility Estherville Community Care Center -
Estherville, Iowa Job Summary:
The Dietary Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking nutritious, appetizing meals for residents in a long-term care facility. This role ensures meals meet dietary requirements, physician orders, and regulatory standards while maintaining high food safety and sanitation practices.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and cook meals according to planned menus, standardized recipes, and special dietary requirements (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, pureed diets). Ensure food is prepared in compliance with residents' individualized care plans and physician-ordered diets. Monitor food temperatures and ensure proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures. Assist with menu planning and suggest substitutions when necessary. Portion and serve food in appropriate quantities and textures. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment in accordance with health department regulations. Inspect and ensure quality of ingredients and finished meals. Work collaboratively with dietary staff, nursing staff, and dietitians. Follow all facility policies and procedures, including infection control and safety guidelines. Assist with inventory, food ordering, and stock rotation (FIFO method).
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous cooking experience, preferably in healthcare, long-term care, or institutional food service. Knowledge of therapeutic diets and food textures is preferred. Food safety certification (such as ServSafe) may be required. Ability to follow standardized recipes and dietary guidelines. Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
Skills & Abilities:
Understanding of food safety and sanitation standards. Ability to prepare meals for large groups efficiently. Good communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Compassion and respect for elderly and vulnerable populations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods. Lift and carry items up to 25-50 pounds. Work in a hot, fast-paced kitchen environment.
Work Environment:
Long-term care or skilled nursing facility kitchen. May include weekends, holidays, and shift work.
