Job Description:
Position Summary The Dietary Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking nutritious, appetizing meals for residents in accordance with approved menus, physician orders, and dietary guidelines. This role ensures all food is prepared safely, served at proper temperatures, and meets the needs of residents, including modified diets. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Prepare meals according to planned menus and standardized recipes Ensure food is cooked, portioned, and served in accordance with dietary requirements Follow all therapeutic diets (mechanical soft, pureed, diabetic, low sodium, etc.) Maintain proper food temperatures and food safety standards Assist with meal plating and tray line as needed Ensure kitchen cleanliness and sanitation per state and federal regulations Properly label, store, and rotate food (FIFO method) Monitor inventory and report shortages to supervisor Operate kitchen equipment safely (ovens, steamers, slicers, etc.) Work closely with dietary aides and nursing staff to meet resident needs Accommodate special requests within dietary guidelines Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred Previous cooking experience (healthcare or institutional setting preferred) Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation practices Ability to follow recipes and dietary restrictions accurately Strong teamwork and communication skills Certifications (Preferred/Required) Food Handler's Permit (required in some states) ServSafe Certification (preferred) Physical Requirements Ability to stand for long periods Lift up to 30-50 lbs Work in a fast-paced kitchen environment Exposure to heat, steam, and cold storage areas Work Environment Nursing home or long-term care facility kitchen May require weekends, holidays, and shift work Key Skills Time management Attention to detail Food safety knowledge Compassion and respect for residents
