Camp Dates:
7/13/26 - 7/24/26 The Camp Explore Cook plays a central role in creating a positive and nourishing experience for campers during 5‑day/4‑night overnight camping trips in a remote, rustic campground setting . This position is responsible for preparing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and daily snacks for all camp groups, while maintaining high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and organization. The Cook must be able to accommodate special dietary needs , including allergies, vegetarian diets, and gluten‑free requirements. Minimum Qualifications Wilderness First Aid or First Aid/CPR certification (training may be provided) California Food Handler Safety Certificate Valid driver's license and a clean driving record Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus 18+ years or older Experience cooking for large groups Comfort camping outdoors for multiple nights and using basic camping equipment Supportive of a culturally diverse environment and staff Knowledge of trauma‑informed and culturally competent service approaches Ability to take initiative, work independently, and meet program goals Strong organizational and communication skills Willingness to participate in staff training, meetings, projects, and evaluations Successful completion of background checks and Child Abuse Prevention Training Ability to serve as a positive role model and collaborate with the camp team Ability to lift and carry 40-50 lbs (coolers, water jugs, food bins) Stand for long periods Work in heat, smoke, or variable weather Move between uneven terrain, camp kitchens, and storage areas Key Responsibilities Meal Planning & Coordination Plan and prepare meals for two camp programs: : Develop or revise menus that provide healthy, appealing meals for overnight campers. Review food lists provided by Backpacking Counselors to ensure adequate supplies for backpacking trips. Organize weekly menus with attention to dietary restrictions and allergies. Food Preparation Prepare three hot meals daily, plus multiple snacks throughout the day Cook meals in a rustic camp setting using campground equipment such as charcoal grills and propane burners. Complete all prep work including washing produce, slicing, boiling, and preparing coals. Maintain food safety without refrigeration Prepare brown‑bag lunches Camper Health & Dietary Needs Maintain awareness of all camper and staff dietary restrictions, allergies, and food preferences and provide healthy alternatives. Ensure all campers receive nutritious meals that support their health and energy needs. Support safe food handling, campsite cleanliness, and proper use of camp equipment. Stocking, Shopping & Inventory Shop weekly at Costco, WinCo, and/or Walmart for food and supplies for all camp programs. Track inventory, restock as needed, and stay within the camp budget. Receive reimbursement for travel related to supply shopping. Maintain and organize camp kitchen equipment and supplies; report equipment needs to the Camp Manager Kitchen Maintenance & Safety Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary camp kitchen. Follow all food‑handling safety protocols. Wash, dry, and store dishes in sterile containers. Ensure all food is stored safely, including proper use of bear boxes. Maintain awareness of environmental hazards and adjust kitchen operations as needed. Participate in emergency procedures Data & Reporting Keep accurate food inventory logs, noting quantities used and items needing replenishment. Track meal counts for each camp program to support budgeting and planning. Report allergies, dietary accommodations, and any food‑related incidents to the Camp Manager Submit weekly expense receipts for reimbursement and budget tracking. Document and report equipment issues, safety concerns, or supply shortages promptly. Record Keeping and Compliance Keep accurate records and reports of incidents, injuries, illnesses, conflicts, or unusual activities; submit documentation to the Camp Manager. Maintain confidentiality of camper and staff health and personal information. Understand and follow child abuse reporting guidelines; ensure that no corporal punishment or misuse of authority occurs at camp.
