Job Description

The Dietary Cook is responsible for preparing meals that meet residents' nutritional needs, physician-ordered diets, and food safety standards. Typical Job Duties Prepare and cook meals according to menus and dietary requirements. Follow special diets such as low-sodium, diabetic, renal, pureed, or mechanically soft diets. Measure and portion food accurately. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment, work areas, and food storage areas. Monitor food temperatures and follow food safety regulations. Assist with receiving, storing, and rotating food supplies. Work closely with dietitians, dietary managers, and nursing staff. Ensure meals are served on schedule and according to residents' dietary restrictions. Record production logs, temperature logs, and other required documentation. Required Skills Knowledge of food preparation and cooking techniques. Understanding of therapeutic and modified diets. Familiarity with food safety standards such as HACCP and local health regulations. Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Good communication and teamwork skills. Common Qualifications High school diploma or GED (often preferred). Previous cooking experience in healthcare, long-term care, hospitals, or restaurants. Food Handler's Permit is required. Ability to stand for long periods and lift food supplies or equipment. Work Environment Dietary cooks must have experience: Skilled nursing facilities Long-term care centers Rehabilitation facilities Assisted living communities
