Position Overview:
The Fleet Detailer & Mechanic Assistant is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the maintenance, cleanliness, and general upkeep of the school district's vehicle fleet. This includes school buses, mini buses, Suburbans, vans, and other district vehicles. The position assists mechanic with basic tasks while ensuring all vehicles are clean, safe, and ready for daily operation. Vehicle Cleaning & Detailing Wash, clean, and detail the interior and exterior of district vehicles, including buses and support vehicles Sweep, mop, vacuum, and sanitize bus interiors to maintain health and safety standards Clean windows, mirrors, seats, floors, and driver compartments Remove trash and debris from vehicles after routes or maintenance work Basic Maintenance Support Assist mechanics with routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire checks, fluid top-offs, and part preparation Help with shop cleanup, organization, and tool maintenance Transport vehicles to and from service bays, fueling stations, or designated parking areas Check and maintain fluid levels (oil, coolant, washer fluid, etc.) under supervision Assist with tire pressure checks and battery inspections Fleet Support Tasks Fuel vehicles as needed Perform basic safety checks (lights, wipers, seat belts, etc.) and report issues Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and yard areas Assist with inventory of cleaning supplies and basic parts Follow all district safety procedures and OSHA guidelines
Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years old with a HS Diploma or GED Clean driving record Mechanical or detailing experience a plus Willingness to learn basic vehicle maintenance and shop procedures Ability to follow directions and safety rules Attention to detail Ability to work alone or with a team Reliable and on time Ability to notice and report problems Good attitude and willingness to help where needed
Working Conditions:
Work performed in bus garage, shop environment, and outdoor fleet yard Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fuel, grease, and loud noises May require early mornings, evenings, or occasional overtime
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly Ability to work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, snow) Ability to climb steps and ladders (bus entry and maintenance access) Ability to perform repetitive motions such as cleaning and lifting
