Job Description

Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts invites qualified candidates to apply for the part-time position of Usher. We strive to create the safest and most enjoyable experience for our guests, and the usher plays a critical role in achieving this goal. As the primary point of contact, ushers set the tone for the entire guest experience and leave the final impression. This temporary assignment is designated for the 2026 - 2027 season. If selected, the anticipated start date will be in August or September. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. Greet and welcome all guests they encounter Hold doors as guests enter the facility Scan guest tickets as the enter the facility and/or theatre Help guests locate their correct theatre entrance Show guests to their specific seats Be able to assist ADA-guests properly Help guests locate the nearest restroom, water fountain, ATM, elevator, box office, fire extinguishers, etc. Be able to answer any show related questions, such as: How long is the performance? Is there an intermission? Are drinks permitted inside the theatre? Enforce rules/policies set by the client and/or House Manager, which are subject to change per event and during an event. Examples of such policies are as follows: keeping the aisles clear, camera/video policy, guest cell phone use, food/beverage policy, etc. Loading/unloading of program kiosks Stuffing/un-stuffing of inserts into programs Be observant of our guests at all times to ensure their overall safety Provide optimal assistance to patrons in an emergency situation or evacuation Attend pre-event meetings for assignment and event specifics Be in assigned area by designated time and stay until otherwise instructed
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent is preferred, but not required Prior experience in guest relations/customer service preferred, but not required Must be able to provide their own uniform which consists of black pants (no jeans), black shoes (no sneakers/boots/sandals), a black vest, white button-up shirt (tuxedo shirt preferred), and a red bow tie Must have, be able to use and/or have access to a working email account. Must be able to pass a security/reference check
Expectations:
Learn the layouts and sections of our three main theatres: A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater, Meymandi Concert Hall, and Raleigh Memorial Auditorium Read event tickets (visual acuity corrected to read as small as 11-font print) in dim lighting with use of a flashlight Follow directions Perform all regular duties outside in inclement weather Lead large groups of people confidently Be friendly, enjoyable to be around, and comfortable approaching and engaging with guests
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Physically able and willing to stand in one place and walk around for several hours at a time, sometimes for the duration of an event Speak confidently and professionally with our guests, clients, and fellow employees Operate an electronic ticket scanner (pre-knowledge of such devices is not required), 2-way radios, and in the case of emergencies, a cellular telephone when needed Work well with others and report to work on-time, appropriately dressed and ready to work when scheduled
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
