Job Title:
Unit Leader (Seasonal) Reports to: Camp Directors Camp Nejeda Camp Nejeda is a unique summer camp in New Jersey dedicated to serving families with type 1 diabetes. Since 1958, it has provided a safe, supportive, and fun environment where campers can enjoy traditional camp activities while learning to manage their diabetes alongside peers who understand their challenges. Camp Nejeda's mission is to empower people with type 1 diabetes to develop confidence, independence, and friendships that last a lifetime. The Unit Leader plays a crucial role in creating a safe, fun, and supportive environment for campers and staff within their assigned unit. They are responsible for supervising counselors, implementing camp policies, managing camper behavior, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. The Unit Leader must possess strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as a deep commitment to the camp's mission and values.
Essential Job Functions:
1.
Supervise and Mentor Counselors:
Provide guidance and support to counselors in carrying out their daily responsibilities, which include camper care, active supervision, and behavior management. The Unit Leader will foster a positive and collaborative environment within their unit, ensuring that counselors feel supported and equipped to handle the challenges of working with campers. 2.
Implement Camp Policies and Procedures:
Ensure that counselors and campers adhere to all camp policies and procedures as detailed in the Staff Handbook. These include, but are not limited to, personnel policies, safety and operational procedures, child abuse policy, anti-bullying policy, cell phone policy, and social media & communication policies. The Unit Leader is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment within their unit, enforcing rules, and addressing any violations promptly and appropriately. 3.
Manage Camper Behavior:
Proactively address camper behavioral issues, using techniques learned during staff training. Implement appropriate disciplinary actions as outlined in the staff handbook while fostering a positive and supportive camp culture. The Unit Leader is responsible for promoting respect, kindness, and inclusivity within their unit, addressing any instances of bullying or harassment immediately, and escalating appropriately. 4.
Facilitate Unit Activities:
Assist in the planning, organization, and implementation of unit-specific activities. These activities should align with the camp's overall program schedule and goals while also catering to the interests and needs of the campers within the unit. The Unit Leader will ensure that these activities are conducted safely and that campers are actively engaged. 5. Maintain a
Clean and Safe Unit Environment:
Ensure the cleanliness and safety of the cabins and surrounding areas within the unit. The Unit Leader will conduct daily cabin inspections, using a provided checklist to assess cleanliness, organization, and safety hazards. The Unit Leader will work with counselors to address any deficiencies and ensure that the living spaces are well-maintained.
Qualifications:
- College Degree preferred, or equivalent experience
- Must be able to reside on camp property from June 18
- August 15, excluding designated days off.
- Able to work collaboratively with a diverse staff and contribute to an inclusive work environment while fostering a sense of belonging in all staff and campers.
Supervisory Skills:
A proven ability to effectively supervise and manage staff, including providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, and ongoing support to foster a positive and productive work environment.
Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Abilities:
Demonstrate proficiency in handling challenging situations, knowing when to escalate, making well-informed decisions, and implementing practical and effective solutions to address a variety of camp-related issues
Camp Experience:
Proven experience working with children in a camp setting
Excellent Communication Skills:
Exhibit outstanding verbal and written communication skills, facilitating clear and effective communication with campers, staff, parents, and leadership team.
Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Abilities:
Demonstrate proficiency in handling challenging situations, making well-informed decisions, and implementing practical and effective solutions to address a variety of camp-related issues efficiently.
- Familiarity with diabetes management is preferred.

Other Responsibilities:
Parents:
Interact with parents/guardians as needed, providing updates on camper concerns. The Unit Leader will ensure that all communication with parents adheres to camp protocols and guidelines.
Camp's Anti-Bullying Policy:
Be a proactive force in preventing and addressing bullying within the unit. The Unit Leader will conduct regular discussions with campers and staff about bullying, provide campers with opportunities to report bullying incidents privately, and take appropriate disciplinary actions against campers who engage in bullying behavior.
Out-of-Camp Trips:
When assigned to lead a camp trip, the Unit Leader will be responsible for the safety and well-being of all campers and staff participating in the trip. This includes assigning supervision, planning seating arrangements on transportation, and ensuring that campers are supervised at all times.
Mission of Camp Nejeda Foundation:
Demonstrate a genuine commitment to the mission of Camp Nejeda Foundation, actively contributing to the overall success of the camp in providing a positive and enriching experience for campers and staff.
Camp Leadership:
Maintain open and consistent communication with the Camp Directors, Activities Director, Waterfront Director, and Health Center staff, providing updates on unit activities, camper behavior, and any other relevant information. The Unit Leader will actively participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
