Hourly, Non-Exempt Position Summary A Host/Hostess at Scramblers is the first and last point of contact for every guest and plays a critical role in shaping the guest experience. As the ambassador of the restaurant, the Host/Hostess sets the tone for hospitality, professionalism, and service excellence. This position requires strong communication skills, a warm and engaging personality, the ability to anticipate guest needs, and the coordination of other front- and back-of-house functions. Hosts/Hostesses help drive sales, manage guest flow, support team communication, and maintain a clean, welcoming environment. Key Responsibilities 1. Guest Relations & Hospitality Provide a warm, genuine, enthusiastic greeting to every guest: "Welcome to Scramblers!" Open the door for guests when possible, greet them by acknowledging their presence—not just their party size. Anticipate guest needs before being asked and remain attentive throughout their visit. Communicate with professionalism, courtesy, and sincerity. Manage first impressions by maintaining a friendly demeanor and smiling continuously as part of the job requirement. Build rapport with guests without neglecting waiting parties or job duties. Assist children, guests with disabilities, and elderly guests respectfully and appropriately. Thank every guest as they leave and invite them to return. 2. Guest Seating & Flow Management Manage seating rotation using the host tablet and maintain awareness of all server sections. Identify table readiness, communicate with bussers to prioritize tables, and seat guests as soon as tables become available. Enter drink orders accurately into the host tablet, assigning seat numbers and offering guests coffee or orange juice. Provide water glasses and a liter of water to each newly seated table. Use the "Reduce Your Wait" policy appropriately for call-ahead guests. Communicate with servers regarding drink orders, large parties, and special needs. Maintain awareness of dining room flow and respond quickly to concerns, such as unattended tables, guests attempting to get server attention, spills, or obstacles in traffic paths. 3. Communication & Coordination Serve as the communication link between managers, servers, bussers, and other hostesses. Direct bussers to tables that need immediate cleaning. Notify management regarding guest concerns, illness, allergies, or unusual circumstances. Ensure all guest complaints are communicated to a manager after following proper listening and response procedures. Coordinate with other hosts to avoid miscommunication about table holds, seating rotations, and wait lists. 4. Sales Support Engage in suggestive selling by highlighting specialty coffees, juices, retail items, and limited-time offerings. Create a comfortable and friendly environment that encourages guests to enjoy their visit and return frequently. Execute strong guest service to drive repeat business and positive word-of-mouth marketing. 5. Maintenance & Side Work Keep the hostess station, windows, doors, menus, and dining room entry area clean and organized at all times. Perform hourly bathroom checks for cleanliness and supply needs. Keep retail coffee displays stocked and organized. Maintain cleanliness of floors, mats, front counter, and seating areas. During downtime, perform tasks such as: Refilling guest coffees Cleaning menus Polishing windows Bisselling floors Assisting with table bussing Complete closing duties, including taking out front trash and getting manager approval before leaving. Qualifications & Skills Friendly, outgoing, professional personality with strong customer service skills. Ability to remain calm and organized in a fast-paced environment. Comfortable multitasking and managing guest flow during busy periods. Strong verbal communication skills and the confidence to direct other staff members when needed. Ability to stand and walk for long periods. Attention to cleanliness, professionalism, and personal appearance. Basic technology skills to operate the host tablet and enter drink orders. Training Requirements All Host/Hostess employees must complete Scramblers' structured training program, which includes: Guest relations and hospitality techniques Seating rotations and table numbering Tablet usage and drink-entry procedures Professional appearance standards Phone etiquette and wait-time estimation Large-party and wait-list management Side work expectations Gift card sales procedures Restaurant sanitation and maintenance requirements No host/hostess may work independently until training is fully completed and approved by the trainer and General Manager.
