Hourly Position Summary:
The Guest Services Associate is often the first interaction guests have with Zoo New York, making their role essential in creating a welcoming environment that encourages visitors to return. This position requires a friendly, personable approach to customer service, as well as the ability to assist with guest inquiries and concerns. In addition to guest interactions, the Guest Services Associate is responsible for the daily operation of the Visitor Center, Howling Wolf Café, and Gift Shop.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Guest Experience & Customer Service Provide a warm, friendly welcome to all visitors and ensure a positive guest experience. Answer questions about the zoo, its exhibits, events, and policies. Handle guest concerns promptly and professionally. Promote memberships, upcoming events, and special programs. Process transactions accurately through the POS system. Answer phone calls and assist with booking birthdays or special events. 2. Gift Shop & Retail Operations Stock shelves, price merchandise, and maintain an organized retail space. Monitor inventory levels and assist in inventory management. Ensure the gift shop is clean and inviting for guests. 3. Café & Food Service Prepare and serve menu items following food safety standards. Monitor food inventory, expiration dates, and maintain proper food temperatures per NYS Health Code. Keep café areas clean and in compliance with health regulations. 4. Membership Sales & Administration Process new membership sales and renewals. Maintain accurate membership records. Actively promote membership benefits to visitors. 5. General Facility Upkeep Assist with cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and maintaining restroom cleanliness. Ensure that public areas are neat and welcoming for guests. 6. Other Duties as Assigned Support special events and seasonal programs. Assist other zoo departments when needed.
Job Requirements:
Strong interpersonal skills - must be friendly, approachable, and professional. Self-motivated - ability to work independently and take initiative. Physical requirements - ability to stand, sit, lift, and climb for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Prior customer service experience preferred. Experience with POS systems and Microsoft Office is a plus. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
