Job Description

Description This position is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the Environmental Services (ENS) team within the Boston Branch Office, which currently comprises members of the Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies and Stakeholder Management Solutions Departments. This role is pivotal in building a strong, cohesive ENS presence in Boston, driving local project execution and profitable growth while ensuring alignment with the broader ENS Global Practice goals and standards. The Boston ENS Section Manager will be at the forefront of ENS's growth in the Boston area. The successful candidate will blend team leadership with direct responsibility for team growth, performance, project success, client satisfaction, and financial performance. This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for ENS matters within the Boston office, acting as a crucial liaison between the Branch Office Manager and the Regional ENS Global Practice leadership. Specific areas of responsibility include the following:
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development:
Lead the Boston ENS team, fostering an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative culture aligned with Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, and integrity. Champion staff development by identifying training needs, providing mentorship, and facilitating career growth opportunities in collaboration with the ENS Global Practice. Organize and conduct the annual performance appraisal process for Boston-organized ENS staff. In coordination with ENS GP management, set KPIs and Goals for all Boston-organized ENS team members. Make Boston an ENS employment destination of choice by continuing to build our brand with local universities and in the ENS industry by being present at industry events, serving as a thought leader, and giving back to the local community. Focus on increasing staff retention by promoting a positive work environment and ensuring team members are engaged in challenging and meaningful work. Implement the Regional ENS Global Practice hiring plan within the Boston office by proactively identifying, interviewing, and onboarding new talent to support strategic growth.
Project & Financial Management:
Take responsibility for the overall success of components of projects executed by the Boston ENS team, ensuring targets for safety, quality, and profitability are met. Directly manage the planning, budgeting, and achievement of select projects for the local ENS portfolio. Oversee team chargeability and utilization to meet the financial goals of the Boston ENS team and report regularly on progress, cost, profit, and schedule. Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving technical and project-related challenges.
Business & Client Development:
Assist in the development and maintenance of the ENS business plan for the Boston market; lead and support proposal efforts to secure profitable growth. Identify project opportunities early, facilitate go/no-go decisions, and assist in preparing and negotiating contracts. Act as a local point of contact for key ENS clients in the region, working closely with project teams to ensure client satisfaction and successful project delivery.
Collaboration & Strategy Implementation:
Serve as the key implementation leader for ENS Global Practice initiatives, processes, and technical development plans for the Boston-based staff. Ensure adherence to all company and global practice quality standards across all projects. Foster strong relationships and communication between the Boston ENS team, the Branch Manager, and Regional ENS Global Practice leadership to ensure seamless collaboration. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, civil engineering, public involvement-related studies or a related field from an accredited program. Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience in environmental services and/or project management. Applicable professional certifications are strongly preferred. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred. Proven experience in personnel management, including mentorship, performance feedback, and team development is strongly preferred. Strong working knowledge of project financials, with demonstrated ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, and risk on complex projects. Strong project management skills and a strategic perspective, with experience in client and business development activities is strongly preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a proven ability to present complex information clearly to staff, management, and clients. History of high performance within the Burns & McDonnell performance management system. Compensation $125,000.00-250,000.00 Yearly The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
