Job Description

Job Description Under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Supervisor, the custodian performs a variety of custodial work to clean and maintain the general appearance of the Gateway Recreation Center and set-up for special events, activities, and classes. Examples of Duties Keep Gateway Recreation Center interior clean and orderly. Perform numerous tasks to maintain and preserve regular and specialty floors including racquetball courts, gymnasiums, and running track. Maintain rubber floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, buffing, sanding, and waxing. Vacuum and clean carpeting. Pick up trash, empty garbage and trash containers, and keep containers clean and sanitary. Maintain the cleanliness of walls, windows and furniture as needed by washing, dusting, waxing, and buffing. Maintain restrooms in a clean and sanitary manner to promote hygiene; replace soap, toilet tissue, paper towels, and all other dispensable items as necessary; unplug stopped up drains, toilets, and urinals. Utilize a variety of tools and equipment including brooms, mops, cleaners, buffers, keys, disinfectants, insecticides, vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, and scrubbers. Secure building by locking doors and windows. Move, set up, and assemble furniture as directed for special events, activities, and classes. Perform emergency custodial duties. Handle records such as work orders and timesheets. Replace burned out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes. Repair and replace dispensers, lockers, doors, hinges, locks, handles, bolts, rivets, nuts, shelves, hardware, and handrails. Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and submit requests monthly. Provides instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have. Monitor hallways, restrooms, and other areas of the Gateway Recreation Center and Gateway Aquatic Center as assigned. Work evenings, weekends, or extended days. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of current practices, procedures, and techniques used in cleaning, sanitation and preservation of facilities. Knowledge of solvents, cleaning agents, and detergents for proper application to appropriate surfaces. Knowledge of safety hazards and preventative maintenance. Able to use cleaning equipment such as electric buffers, floor scrubbers, wet and dry vacuums, shampoo machines, hand tools, and other power equipment in the performance of routine cleaning. Able to follow written and oral instructions. Able to work independently or as part of a custodial team.
Physical Activities Include:
Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and taste and smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lifting and carrying items and boxes weighing up to forty (40) pounds. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment. Standing for long periods of time and using cleaning equipment. May be exposed to heat, cold, odors, smoke, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, humidity, dusts and/or intense light while performing custodial services. Requirements Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Prior custodial experience and recent experience with general public preferred. Knowledge of large facility custodial procedures preferred. Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability. Paid Time Off (PTO) accrued at a rate of 176 hours or 22 days per year for the first two years and thereafter at higher levels set out in the Borough Code (KGBC 3.30.030).
