This position supports daily shelter operations by cleaning common areas, restrooms, offices, dining areas, showers, and other assigned spaces. The Custodian helps ensure the facility remains organized, well-stocked, and properly maintained throughout each shift. The Custodian plays an important role in creating a respectful and healthy environment where participants can feel safe, supported, and cared for. Duties Clean and sanitize restrooms, showers, sinks, mirrors, toilets, and other bathroom areas. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors throughout the facility. Empty trash cans and replace liners in common areas, offices, restrooms, and outside areas. Clean and disinfect tables, chairs, counters, doors, handles, and high-touch surfaces. Assist with cleaning dining areas before and after meals. Clean and dispose of serving dishes, food waste, and related trash as needed. Restock hygiene supplies, paper towels, toilet paper, soap, and cleaning materials. Maintain cleanliness in participant areas, staff areas, hallways, entryways, and storage spaces. Perform routine walk-throughs to identify spills, trash, safety hazards, or areas needing attention. Report maintenance issues, damaged equipment, plumbing problems, safety concerns, or supply needs to management. Assist with light outdoor cleaning, including smoking areas, parking lot, sidewalks, and trash disposal areas. Support staff during daily operations by helping keep the facility clean and orderly. Follow all health, safety, sanitation, and infection-control procedures. Properly use and store cleaning products, chemicals, and equipment. Complete cleaning checklists, logs, and other required documentation. Assist with setup and cleanup for programs, meals, meetings, or special events. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Basic English, spelling, and math skills. Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facility maintenance experience preferred. Must be able to follow instructions from Senior Management and direct supervisors. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, participants, and visitors. Must be dependable, punctual, and professional at all times. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must have the ability to work with a sense of urgency when cleaning spills, safety hazards, or emergency situations. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, lift, carry, push, and pull as required for the position. Must be able to safely use cleaning equipment and cleaning chemicals. Must be respectful, patient, and kind when working in a shelter or community-based environment. Basic computer skills preferred for completing required online training. Applicants must have a current negative TB test or the ability to obtain one within 14 days of hire. Background checks will be performed for all applicants.
