Job Description
Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the building Administrator and the Head Custodian, the Custodian will be responsible for daily custodial operations; maintaining a sanitary and safe facility and grounds for students, employees and the general public; minimizing the risk of property damage, loss and liability exposure; completing assignments in a safe, accurate, and timely manner; and overseeing and supporting assigned custodians in the performance of their duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Conducts daily inspections of school buildings and grounds, promptly informing the Facilities Director and Building Administrator of maintenance and repair needs. Performs minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs as necessary to maintain safe and functional school facilities. Coordinates with main office staff to verify and account for deliveries of school supplies and materials. Ensures all custodial equipment is properly maintained and kept in good working condition. Implement best practices related to new maintenance methods and materials to enhance facility operations as directed. Completes daily cleaning tasks according to established standards and schedules. Communicates and promotes best safety practices to students, staff, and visitors. Regularly inspects the school site to verify conditions are safe, secure, and suitable for daily operations. Works collaboratively with school staff, contractors, and service providers to effectively address building needs and improvements. Responsible for snow removal and applies ice treatments on sidewalks, ensuring safe access to school entrances during inclement weather. Assists administrators in coordinating school safety drills (e.g., fire drills), managing communications with external vendors (alarm companies), emergency service providers (fire, police) for compliance with safety codes and regulations. Sets up and breaks down facilities for school events, functions, and other activities. Participates in annual summer cleaning and maintenance tasks, including deep cleaning, carpet extraction, and floor waxing. Remains on school property during scheduled school hours and approved extended hours for authorized building use. Maintains a professional personal appearance consistent with employee handbook guidelines, understanding its impact on students' and staff's perception of East Windsor Public Schools. Proficiently uses East Windsor Public Schools' (EWPS) Google platform tools, including Gmail, Google Calendar, and other relevant applications. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a custodial team. Performs additional custodial-related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager, Head Custodian, or OperationsHero.
Additional Duties:
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Director and Head Custodian, ensuring a clean and safe working environment.
Equipment:
The knowledge, skills, and abilities to operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment, including but not restricted to: brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuums, snow blowers, lawn tractors, shovels, power mowers, leaf blowers, weed whackers.
Safety Requirements:
Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and equipment used in the performance of duties. Wears all appropriate safety gear. Must comply with the school district's chemical safety program.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Knowledge of the position and duties. Valid driver license.
Physical Demands:
• Capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including but not limited to lifting and moving items weighing up to 65 pounds, operating snow removal equipment such as shovels and snow blowers. Able to frequently stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, reach, talk, and hear. Occasionally required to climb, balance, crouch, and crawl. Possesses adequate visual acuity and depth perception, with or without corrective lenses. •The physical demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment:
Often work indoors, moving between classrooms and other school areas. May be exposed to noise levels that are distracting. Works near others, often within a few feet. Work related tasks may be subject to deadlines and time constraints, must be able to prioritize tasks May be assigned work in outdoor environments and be exposed to inclement weather including heat, cold, rain, and snow. ? Responsible for upkeep and care of school grounds, including landscaping tasks such as mulching and general softscape maintenance. Ability to work with chemicals. A properly fitted respirator will be provided if needed.
Work Days:
Schedule is set by the Facilities Director to meet the needs of the district.
Work Scheduled :
40 hours per week Monday through Friday. Overtime may be required and mandatory to meet the needs of the district. May be called in early or after scheduled shifts in cases of emergency or natural disaster such as snow.
