Position Title:
Custodian Overview:
The Custodian plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and organized environment across the facility. This position supports daily operations by ensuring all areas-including office, warehouse, and community spaces-meet high standards for cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and operational readiness. The Custodian helps protect the integrity of food handling environments, supports staff and volunteer activities, assists with event and meeting setup, monitors facility conditions, and helps ensure the building is secure during after-hours operations. This role requires attention to detail, accountability, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while maintaining the employer's commitment to safety, professionalism, and mission excellence.
What You Will Do:
As Custodian, you will ensure that the facility remains clean, sanitary, safe, secure, and operationally ready each day. You will clean and maintain high-traffic areas, support warehouse sanitation needs, monitor custodial inventory, and prepare spaces for meetings, trainings, and community events. You will safely operate cleaning equipment, follow proper chemical usage guidelines, conduct after-hours safety and security checks, and ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety standards. Through your work, you will help create a safe, welcoming, and mission-ready environment for staff, volunteers, community partners, and neighbors we serve.
Essential Responsibilities Facility Cleaning & Sanitation:
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, offices, warehouse areas, breakrooms, conference rooms, and common spaces.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors in both office and warehouse environments.
- Empty trash, recycling, and food waste, and ensure proper disposal procedures are followed.
- Maintain cleanliness in high-touch and high-traffic areas throughout the facility.
- Follow food safety, sanitation, and workplace cleanliness standards appropriate for a food bank environment.
- Support warehouse sanitation and facility readiness for audits, inspections, and daily operations.
Supplies & Equipment Management:
- Maintain inventory of custodial supplies, cleaning chemicals, paper products, and facility support materials.
- Monitor usage levels and proactively communicate supply replenishment needs to management.
- Request replacement of cleaning supplies, equipment, or materials as needed to support uninterrupted daily operations.
- Safely operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as vacuums, buffers, floor scrubbers, and related custodial tools.
- Use cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety guidelines, manufacturer instructions, and organizational protocols.
Event & Space Support:
- Assist with conference room, meeting, training, and event setup and breakdown, including tables, chairs, and equipment.
- Ensure meeting and event spaces are clean, organized, and operationally ready before and after use.
- Support internal and external events to ensure a positive experience for staff, volunteers, and community guests.
Facility Maintenance, Security & Safety:
- Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, facility concerns, or operational deficiencies promptly.
- Assist with minor facility upkeep such as light bulb replacement and basic repairs as assigned.
- Conduct after-hours building safety and security checks, including: o Securing doors, gates, and access points o Verifying emergency exits and exit routes remain clear and accessible o Inspecting panic bars, panic bolts, and emergency hardware for proper function o Verifying fire extinguishers, alarm pull stations, and other fire safety equipment are present and unobstructed o Monitoring the facility for safety hazards, suspicious activity, water leaks, equipment issues, or environmental concerns•Ensure the facility is properly secured at the close of business when assigned.
- Immediately report security, safety, or facility concerns through established reporting channels.
Team & Mission Support:
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and leadership to support daily operations.
- Represent Employer in a professional and respectful manner.
Additional Duties:
Perform other responsibilities as assigned in support of program operations and organizational goals.
Essential business/ first responder:
In instances of a federal, state, or locally declared emergency, Employer is considered an essential business service and emergency responder. All employees may be required to perform regular or emergent duties on-site. Employee safety is balanced with business and community necessity. Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, facilities, or building maintenance experience preferred, especially in warehouse, food distribution, or commercial environments.
- Knowledge of cleaning tools, equipment, chemicals, and facility maintenance practices.
- Understanding of sanitation standards, workplace safety practices, and basic building security procedures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment during after-hours facility operations.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This position operates in a combination of office, warehouse, and community spaces within the facility and may include after-hours responsibilities.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, lift, and perform repetitive cleaning tasks throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in both indoor office settings and active warehouse environments.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals and equipment with proper safety protocols in place.
- Ability to perform after-hours facility walkthroughs and building security checks.
- Flexible schedule required, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends to support events, operational needs, and facility security.
