Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE
Performs various duties and tasks affecting the interior environment of college facilities, with the primary responsibility to keep building interiors tidy, clean, and sanitary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Clean, sanitize, and polish bath, lavatory, shower, and sink fixtures
Dust, wash, and sponge mop
Sanitize and/or clean furniture, woodwork, walls, windows, and glass items
Dust shades and covers on light fixtures
Replace light bulbs
Remove waste and debris from areas
Sweep, vacuum, and shampoo carpet
Strip, wax, and buff tile floors
Move furniture
Maintain pertinent cleaning logs and records
Submit maintenance repair requests and work orders
Exercise reason and judgement to complete duties and assignments. Effectively solve work related problems.
Occasionally direct the duties of a work study/student
Other activities are necessary to keep assigned work area tidy, clean, and sanitary
Other duties as assigned by supervisor
SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED
Show a welcoming and helpful attitude to all students, employees, and community members that use College buildings.
Effectively communicate with supervisor, coworkers, and others to the extent required to safely complete work tasks.
Develop professional relationships with coworkers and avoid conflict.
Be honest and trustworthy (Employee will have access to secure areas and other people's personal property).
Be proactive and self-directed with work tasks.
Use reason and judgment to effectively solve work related problems.
Adapt, with minimal or no advance notice, to changes in procedures and practices as is required to support the mission of the College.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE REQUIRED
Operate heavy-duty, high-speed vacuums, rug shampooers, strippers, and floor polishers.
Perform minor maintenance of custodial equipment using small hand tools.
EDUCATION / TRAINING PREFERRED
Previous work experience as a custodian/janitor is a plus.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Basic math skills.
Communicate effectively in oral and written English.
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS
Five eight-hour shifts totaling 40 hours per work week
May be required to work early morning shifts or late night shifts
Must be able to work for several hours standing
Most tasks are performed indoors, in conditioned and heated spaces. Will occasionally work in mechanical and utility rooms. Occasional outside work such as carrying trash to dumpsters, cleaning windows, and clearing leaves and debris from entryways.
